Speech:
Barack Obama once said “ The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t
wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the
world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope” (Wilhelm, 2009). Well as the best example of a
hopeless state was the European Union after WW2. The whole area had been ravaged by war. Whole
cities were destroyed by firebombs. A landscape unsuitable for most. Though instead of mourn Europe
rose to the occasion to rebuild its society into a sustainable one. One where protecting the landscape and
the environment were at the front of it's priority list. Ministry of Norway Affairs states “ The purpose of
the Norwegian Pension Fund is to invest parts of the large surplus generated by the Norwegian petroleum
sector, generated mainly from taxes of companies, but also payment for license to explore as well as the
state's direct financial interest and dividends from partly state-owned Statoil” into organizations that shall
help counteract the effects of the oil industry on the environment. The Integrated Pollution Prevention and
Control Act “establishes a procedure for authorising these activities and sets minimum requirements to be
included in all permits, particularly in terms of pollutants released.” Freiburg teaches us through their
wealth from ecotourism, that the importance of nature on the modern generation seems to overshadowed
by the luxuries offered in urban living. What the people of this generation forget is that the day our lives
become so luxurious that there is no more difficulty is that day that we shall lose our humanity. As
Roosevelt once said “ People need nature so that man can test the limit of their body.” America is now in
it’s own environmental crisis, though the destruction is not as visible when compared to Europe after
WW2. Though the Threat is still real. With the Love Canal event which dropped approximately 21,800
tons of chemical wastes unknowingly into the water source. Causing a significant increase in birth
defects, and other health problems for the citizens. Then the Gulf of Mexico oil spill which dumped
between ” 2 and 3.8 million barrels of oil,” states the New York Times , demonstrated to the world the
damage a man-made disaster could truly have. Though this disasters seem as to uneffect the minds of
Critics. Critics of the Green Revolution argue “ Much of the technology associated with green living does
provide benefits to the environment but often at a much higher cost than their traditional counterparts.”
Though fail to provide the statistics that show that although initial cost can be more expensive the money
saved covers the initial deficit of products 10x over. Critics also like to argue that “ adopting a green
lifestyle can often be time-consuming for those who are fully committed to green living.” Though more
time-consuming, the brief minutes we spend a day to make the Earth more green can save thousands of
lives in the future. As the great president Barack Obama once said “The best way to not feel hopeless is
to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some
good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.” So the Question is
, Will you as American take upon the initiative to create a greener society to save the environment for
those of the future generations to enjoy? Or Will you just sit on the sideline and watch the hopeless
landscape wither away? Thank You For Your Time, Any questions?
