Location // 219 Eldridge St (corner of Stanton) New York, NY 10002
J & F Deli and Grocery
The Variables//        (owner/staff + clients)community   + (inside bodega + outside bodega)environment   = that’s what we are finding out!
The Interviews// Listen What? Where? When? How? How much? How often? Since when?Like it? Change it? Improve it?Hate it?etc. etc. etc.
The Interviewees// - 5 men - All have lived in the  Neighborhood their whole lives. - All are of Puerto Rican or Dominican heritage. - They either work at the bodega or shop there everyday.
Interview one// Roberto Teilera
Roberto Teilera, Dominican Republic Q. - How often do you Shop here? A. - Everyday Q. - What’s your Favorite thing to eat here? A. - Budweiser Beer, loves the beer more than anything in the entire store. Q. - What’s your Favorite thing to eat here? A. - Breakfast- eggs, bacon, toast  Q. - What else do you buy here? Any groceries? A. - No. Only Beer. Q. - Would You Want Any healthier choices in the bodega? A. - No, he doesn’t want any healthier choices
Interview two// Martin
Martin- Puerto Rican Q. - How often do you Shop here? A. - 3 times a day Q. - What’s your Favorite thing to eat here? A. - Breakfast- eggs, bacon, toast  Q. - What do you buy here? A. - Juice Drinks- Orange Juice, Grapefruit Juice, Cranberry, etc Q. - Would You Want Any healthier choices in the bodega?  A. - He misses grapes.
Interview three// Alberto
Alberto- Dominican Republic - How often do you Shop here? A. - Everyday. Q. - What.s your Favorite thing to eat here? A. - Rice and Beans, Roast Beef Sandwich. Q. - What do you buy here? A. - Rice and Beans, Soda. - Would You Want Any healthier choices in the bodega?  A. - Would want better bananas, doesn’t like the ones there.
Interview four// Owner- Roberto Rodriguez
Owner// Robert Rodriguez- Puerto Rican Q. - What type of  Food you say brings in the most profit? A. - Rice and Beans , Snapples, chips, candy,etc. Q. - When did you start running this bodega? A. - 5 years Q. - Do you feel that if there was a integration of healthier food such-as fruits and vegetables, that you business would benefit from it? A. - maybe, but the chips and stuff make money. I need money.
Q. - What is your relationship like with the vendors that help bring the products into this bodega? A. - Its good, I work with my family and friends. What more could you ask for?  Q - The type of customers that come in and out of here are American Spanish.  A. - If I had the chance to renovate, I wouldn’t, because it loses business. I have never close in 14 years. Q. - If you were to have healthy food , what you want to provide? A. - probably Apples and Oranges . I mean everyday new fruit comes in?

Inside the bodega// Observe How is the stock arranged? Does the produce look fresh? What is the first stock that you see when you come in? -etc. etc. etc
The produce// - Fruits (Plantains,Oranges,Bananas) are stored in boxes. In which they are going old quickly. One costumer complained about the quality of the bananas. Another wanted a bigger variety of fruits. - Vegetables are in the in a display refrigerator, but they are piled up and unorganized.
Snack Food// The bodega is stuffed with snack food that piles up next to the counter. There is a variety of chips, cookies, crackers, etc. All these products are individually wrapped. Positioned at the most prominent spots around the counter and the entrance of the bodega - It can be assumed that the snack foods are some of the most popular poducts sold at the bodega.
Beverages// Soda’s and other non-water soft drinks are placed in especially prominent, at eye level, in the refrigerators. Water is situated in the back of the bodega. It is not something that is in the costumers eye field when entering the store. - the bodega offers a wide array of cheap bears, that are mostly located in the front of the store.
The Atmosphere// Everybody was very friendly. Most costumers were men.  You could observe that the people that shop at the J&F bodega were there everyday. This implies that the bodega is a kind of hang out. the bodega is well integrated in the neighborhood community that is located south of Stanton. This neighborhood is mostly Puerto Rican or Dominican.
The Tools// A camera that is small enough to not get too much attention. the camera should also have a video function in order to record video interviews. A traditional set of pen and paper to make quick notes and to write down observations and answers from the interviews.
