DESIGNING INSTRUCTIONS USING
THE INTERNET AND OTHER E-
RESOURCES
GROUP 6
Over the years, so much has been discussed
on the Internet, its use and application. Its
dynamism requires that humans continue to
upgrade and improve their knowledge of it. It
is the aim of this presentation to do just that.
The focal points are:
• Definition of the Internet and World Wide
Web.
• Some search engine and their uses.
• Educational opportunities of the Internet to
both learners and teachers.
What is the Internet?
• The word “Internet” is used to describe a
network of networks which incorporate a very
large and complicated set of equipment. It is a
means of connecting a computer to any other
computer anywhere in the world via dedicated
routers and servers. When two computers are
connected over the Internet, they can send and
receive all kinds of information such as text,
graphics, voice, video, and computer programs.
The Internet is however, different from the World
Wide Web.
World Wide Web
The World Wide Web, or simply Web, is a way of
accessing information over the medium of the
Internet. It is an information-sharing model that
is built on top of the Internet. The Web utilizes
browsers, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox, to
access Web documents called Web pages. Web
documents also contain graphics, sound, text and
video. The Web is just one of the ways
information can be disseminated over the
Internet. It is just a large portion of the Internet
but the two terms are not synonymous and
should not be confused.
This has some slick features like “zero-click”
information i.e. all your answers are found on
the first results page. DuckDuckGo helps to
clarify what question you are really asking.
Once you give it a try, you will discover that
you might like this clean and simple search
engine.
This search engine is a longtime name in the
World Wide Web. The search options are as
good as Google, Bing or DuckDuckGo. The
results groupings are what really Ask.com
stand out. The presentation is arguably
cleaner and easier to read than Google or
Yahoo! Or Bing and the results groups seem to
be more relevant.
It is termed the “decision engine”. Bing tries to
support your researching by offering
suggestions in the leftmost column, while also
giving you various search options across the
top of the screen. Things like “wild
suggestions”, “visual search”, and “related
searches” might be very useful to you and
worth trying.
this is a Deep Web engine that searches other
search engines for you. Unlike the regular
web, Deep Web pages are usually harder to
locate by conventional search. That is when
Yippy becomes very useful. If you are
searching for obscure hobby interest blogs.
Obscure government information, tough-to-
find obscure news, academic research and
otherwise obscure content, then Yippy is your
tool.
This is one of the most useful websites on the
World Wide Web. Webopedia is an
encyclopedic resource dedicated to searching
techno terminology and computer definitions.
Webopedia is absolutely a perfect resource for
non-technical people to make more sense of
the computers around them.
This search engine consists of several things. It
is a search engine, news aggregator, a
shopping center, an email box, a travel
directory, a horoscope and game center, and
more. This web portal makes it a very useful
site for internet beginners. Searching the web
should also be about discovery and
exploration, and Yahoo! delivers that in
wholesale quantities.
Years ago, Dogpile was the fast and efficient
choice before Google. Things changed,
Dogpile faded into obscurity and Google
became king. But today, Dogpile is coming
back with a growing index and a clean and
quick presentation that is testimony to its
halcyon days. If you want to try a search tool
with pleasant presentation and helpful
crosslink results, definitely try Dogpile.
This is a favorite destination for longtime Web
lovers. The Archive has been taking snapshots
of the entire World Wide Web for years now,
allowing you and me to travel back in time to
see what a web page looked like years ago
This is the one “human-powered” search site
in this list, employing a committee of editors
to manually sift and vent thousands of pieces
of content. This means that you will get fewer
Mahalo hit results than you will get at Bing or
Google. But it also means that most Mahalo
results have a higher quality of content and
relevance.
Averaging 1,100,000,000 estimated unique
monthly visitors, this search engine is the
undisputed king. Google is fast, relevant, and
the largest single catalogue of web pages
available today. Try using Google “images”,
“maps” and “news” features for they are
outstanding services for locating photos,
geographic directions, and news headlines.
Educational Opportunities of the Internet
The Internet holds great potentials in education. It can
innovate school/education system and make it more
productive and efficient.
First, the Internet can be used to stimulate learners to
learn actively and independently in a self-directed way
and/or in collaboration with others.
Second, teaching/learning materials can be provided
on-line. This could be in form of syllabi, course outline,
lecture notes, etc.
Third, it encourages the democratization of education,
that is, access to education by all irrespective of ability,
age or status, anywhere and anytime.
In life-long teaching/learning, the Internet provides opportunities
for acquiring the four major forms of learning outlined by UNESCO
(Delors, et al., 1999). These are learning to know, learning to do,
learning to live together and learning to do.
Learning to know deals with the acquisition broad knowledge
relevant to several areas of human endeavor and the opportunity to
work in-depth on a small number of subjects.
Learning to do refers to knowledge and skills acquired not only in
occupational skills but also the competence to deal with many
situations.
Learning to live together entails developing an understanding of
other people and appreciation of the interdependence of humans.
Learning to be relates to the development of one’s personality and
being able to act with even greater autonomy, judgment and
personal responsibility.
