Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS) are bacteria that cause a variety of infections in children, most commonly tonsillopharyngitis (strep throat). GABHS infection cannot be diagnosed based on symptoms alone and requires a rapid strep test or culture. While penicillin remains the gold standard treatment, other antibiotics like cephalosporins and azithromycin are also effective, especially since they have better compliance rates with shorter 5-day treatment durations. GABHS spreads through close contact with infected individuals and can cause complications like rheumatic fever if left untreated.
