- 1. A guide to finding books in the Aquinas College Library (the steps in this guide also work for locating audio & visual resources, TEP kits, and other cataloged media)
- 2. Here are a few suggestions on how to utilize the Online Catalog or the OPAC. The Library’s catalog can be found at: http://library.aquinascollege.edu Select the “Search” tab to use the online catalog
- 3. Search Options; the OPAC provides several options for locating shelf numbers for physical items Title option works best if you know the exact title or if you know the first few words of the title. Use Author for works written/edited by a specific person(s) or entity. Author searches work best with the order of: last name, first name. Select Keyword , if you are searching by topic Subject searches allow you to search by assigned subject headings, which provide precise descriptions of the content of the work. Power search can be used to combine terms for a more focused, specificc search query. It can be used for a topic that reveals itself with different words or expressions
- 4. An Example Search on "Thomas Aquinas" as a Title reveals a number of possibilities.
- 5. Open the Record with the title "Thomas Aquinas As Reader of the Psalms" : Use this record to explore more options. Notice the Subjects assigned to this book. You can search on any subject heading. By exploring the subjects, you can locate books on related topics.
- 6. Open "Thomas, Aquinas, Saint, 1225?-1274. Postilla super Psalmos “ and you will be able to view related subject headings which lead to other works on St. Thomas Aquinas.
- 7. An alternative; try Power Search Power search can be used to combine terms for a more focused, specific search query. It can be used for a topic that reveals itself with different words or expressions. Try a Power search for "Aquinas" and "Trinity." This search will retrieve item records in which the two terms “Aquinas" and “Trinity" both appear in the indexed bibliographic record. There may be more items in the collection discussing Aquinas' view of the Trinity; your search could be expanded then by terms such as "Aquinas and God" etc to find a different set of records.
