Aim of the Seminar
• The aim of this seminar is raising the awareness of
the audience regarding :
– Identification of h- Index.
– Magnitude of h- Index.
– Measurement of h- Index (manual /automatic).
– Difference between (h- Index & impact factor).
– h- Index & Impact Factor estimation Web sites or Data
bases.
– Challenges of publication.
– Opportunities that may be assist the authors to
overcome the challenges of publication.
What is the h-Index?
• The h-Index is a metric to measure the
productivity and impact of the published
work of scholars.
• h-Index developed by (Jorge Hirsch) 2005.

How to measure the h- Index?
1- Manual Method.
2- Automatic Method BY:
- SCOPUS.
- Google scholar.

Measure the h- Index by Manual Method.
1- List of published articles.
2- Determine the citation of each article through
Google scholars.
3- Rank the articles from the most cited to the least

VS
Impact Factor (IF)
Impact Factor (IF)
• The impact factor (IF) is a measure used to
indicate the relative importance, impact of a
journal within its field.
• The impact factor was devised by Eugene
Garfield, the founder of the Institute for Scientific
Information (ISI).
• Impact factors are calculated yearly starting from
1975 for those journals that are indexed (ISI)
Impact Factor (IF) for journal ranking
 Example:
• To calculate the Impact Factor of Journal (s) in 2009.
• 2009 impact factor = A/B.
where:
• A = the number of times that all items published in that
journal in 2007 and 2008 were cited by indexed
publications during 2008.
• B = the total number of "citable articles" published by that
journal in 2007 and 2008.
The authors should be familiar with
Web sites or Data bases which are
related to
h- Index & Impact Factor estimation
systems.

Web of Knowledge
• Web of Knowledge (formerly known as Institute for
Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Knowledge) is an
academic citation indexing and search service, which is
provided by Thomson Reuters and founded by Eugene
Garfield in 1960.
• Web of Knowledge covers the sciences, social
sciences, arts and humanities. It provides bibliographic
content and tools to access, analyze, and manage
research information.
• Capturing 65 million cited references annually.
• Scopus is a bibliographic database containing
citations for academic journal articles. It
covers nearly 22,000 titles from over 5,000
publishers.
• It is owned by Elsevier and available online.
Challenges of publication at indexed
Journals
• Unoriginal research.
• Incorrect or flawed research methods.
• Unrepresentative statistics.
• Plagiarism.
• Small sample size.
• Ethical approval not obtained.
• Poor written.
Opportunities
that may be assist the authors
to overcome the challenges of
publication.
1- Online Courses of Biostatistics
2- Using (G*Power) as a Tool to Compute
Sample Size Accurately
3- Using plagiarism Detector programs
4- Apply a reference management soft
ware.
™
5- Make your research more visible
and reachable
6- Self enhancement H- Index strategy
Finally
• There is no way to
get experience
except
through experience
