- 2. Cross Line/Bar Line Headline It consist of single line centered over the story. This headline may be used in one column or more column story. Three missing class XII girls found in Ajmer Jaipur: The three girls who had gone missing from Brahmpuri locality in the city were today found in Ajmer, police said. The girls, all studying in class XII in a local school, had been untraceable since yesterday afternoon. They were found in Ajmer today, they said. On questioning, the girls confessed that they had planned the trip to Ajmer as they had wished to visit the place. The matter is being probed whether they went to Ajmer on their own or were taken by someone, the police added.
- 3. 27 fresh cases of swine flu in Delhi New Delhi: Twenty-seven fresh cases of swine flu were reported in the capital on Monday including a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at a hospital that treats patients of H1N1. Those suspected with the disease have been admitted to Safdarjung hospital, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Lok Nayak Hospital among others. Chief Medical Officer of the swine flu detection centre at RML Hospital, S K Sharma, along with a junior doctor have also been detected with the virus and they have been put under home quarantine for suspected influenza A (H1N1).The Delhi government had last week identified 17 government and five private hospitals for isolation care and treatment facility for H1N1 cases.

- 8. Inverted Pyramid Headline This consists of two or three lines. Each line shorter than the previous one and centered. Usually used in single-column news story. Example: 1) Tibetans showcase documents to back independence claim. 2) IIM Council will not have powers to override institutes, unlike IIT Council
- 9. Drop/Stepped Lines Headline This pattern is of 2-3 lines, each approximately of same length. In case of 2-lines, first line is set to the left of the column and second line is set to the right. Example: IIM Council will not have powers to override institutes, unlike IIT Council In case of 3-lines, top line is flush left, second line is indented one space and third line is indented two space and flush right. Example: Bush condemns explosion into Mumbai locals.
- 10. Inverted Stepped Headlines This is opposite to stepped headlines. In this, first line is spread over the whole column, second line is shorter than the first and third line is shorter than the second. Both second and third lines are flush left. Example: IIM Council will not have powers to override institutes, unlike IIT Council
- 11. Hanging Indentation Headline This patterns carries 2, 3 or 4 lines, first line is longer than other lines and flush left. Other two lines are equal & indented to an identical number of spaces at the left. Example: IIM Council will not have powers to override institutes, unlike IIT Council
- 12. Square Indentation Headline In this pattern, headlines runs into three or four lines. All lines remain equal. Headline gives a impression of a square. Example: Parliament calls for a special meet.
- 13. Roller/Waist Headline In this pattern, first and third lines are of equal length and second line is shorter and centered. Example: 1) New Delhi Summit crucial for NAM countries. 2) IIM Council will not have powers to override institutes, unlike IIT Council
- 14. Kicker/over line/shoulder Headline Kicker is a subordinate line placed on the top of the main headline. It is mainly of 1/3 width than headline. Mainly used in multi-column headline but can be used for single column also. Size of the Main lines are larger than the line placed at the top. - 16. Banner Headline Extended to cover all the columns of the page. Used for important occasions, it is the top headline under masthead. Example: Indira Gandhi shot dead Pranav Mukherjee elected as a new President of India
- 17. Skyline Headline This pattern of headline used in extra important occasions. In this pattern, the masthead is pushed down and headline is given over the masthead o the top of the page. Very rarely used. Example: Tsunami hits southern part of the country, thousand of people died The Time of India (mast head)
- 18. The variety used in newspaper for writing headline are endless and exhaustive. Even they vary from newspaper to newspaper, state to state and country to country. Headline patterns depends on style of the newspaper, has adopted. Also, it depends on the writer’s creativity and news sense.
