MySQL was created in 1994 by David Axmark, Allan Larsson, and Michael Widenius in Sweden as a lightweight database based on mSQL that was faster and more flexible. It was initially created for personal usage but is now commonly used as a web database. In 2008, MySQL AB was acquired by Sun Microsystems for $1 billion. MySQL is used for various purposes including data warehousing, e-commerce, and logging, but is most commonly used as a database for websites.
