History
•Advent of the MYSQL project began in 1979 with the invention of UNIREG by Michael
Widenius
•This database tool was created for the handy management of databases
•The collaboration of UNIREG (Michael Widenius) & mSQL (David Hughes) had bounded the
world to explore MySQL Database(1995)
•MySQL was initially created for personal usage from mSQL based on the low-level language
ISAM.
•MySQL has been named after co-founder Monty Widenius’s daughter- My. The logo, a dolphin
is known as ‘Sakila’.
Introduction
•MySQL is an open-source database software by Oracle that allows handy management of
relational databases.
•It is one of the popular, fast, scalable DBMS alternatives as compared with other industry
solutions like Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle Database.
•The database is commonly used in relation to the PHP scripts to develop enterprise & dynamic
server apps.
•MySQL is compliant with the ANSI SQL standard
How does MySQL work?
Built on the Client-Server Architecture, the model
is specifically for the end-users to access resources
from a centralized computer known as a server.
The requests to the server are made through GUI
(Graphical User Interface) in lieu of getting the
desired output. The requests to the server are
matched with the instructions similar to the client-
server model.
MYSQL server is the backbone behind the working
of the MYSQL database. The server handles the
entire set of database instructions, commands, and
statements being a separate program.
Difference between SQL & MySQL
SQL MySQL
SQL is a language to manage databases MySQL is a database software
SQL is used to query databases MySQL stores the data
SQL is Structured Query Language MySQL is RDBMS
SQL commands remain the same MySQL software is updated regularly
Features
•OPEN SOURCE: There is no need to pay anything for MySQL
•MULTI-USER SUPPORT: Multiple clients have concurrent access to one or more databases
simultaneously
•PORTABILITY: MySQL works on many operating systems
•UNDERSTANDS SQL: MySQL understands SQL, which is the standard language of choice for all
modern database systems
•HIGH PERFORMANCE: Works very quickly and well even with large data sets, supports large
database up to 50 million rows
•EASY TO USE: It is simple to install and implement.
•SPEED: MySQL is fast, responds to data requests faster than others
Features(cont.)
•SMALL IN SIZE: MySQL has modest(fair) distribution size, especially compared to the huge
space footprint of certain other database systems.
•RUNS: many of the world’s most demanding websites/ search engines/ social networks. Eg.:
Google, yahoo, YouTube etc.
Commonly Used Queries/ Commands
Statement Function Syntax
SELECT used to select data from a database SELECT *
FROM table_name;
WHERE used to filter records SELECT *
FROM table_name WHERE condition;
AND displays a record if all the conditions
separated by AND are TRUE
SELECT column1, column2, ...
FROM table_name
WHERE condition1 AND condition2 AND condition3 ...;
OR displays a record if any of the
conditions separated by OR is TRUE
SELECT column1, column2, ...
FROM table_name
WHERE condition1 OR condition2 OR condition3 ...;
NOT displays a record if the condition(s) is
NOT TRUE
SELECT column1, column2, ...
FROM table_name
WHERE NOT condition;
