HOME AUTOMATION
• Home Automation means making
of a smart home using many
automation techniques.
• The automation techniques which
can be used for the same are PLC,
raspberry pi, Arduino(majorly for
prototypes) and many more.
• Smart home is the home which is
completely designed based on the
user’s needs such as making of
coffee in the morning as soon as
the user wakes up and then turning
on the toast machine for the
breakfast.
SMART HOME
Smart home comprises of the following things :
• Smart security system, like if the user is alone at home and if anyone comes around the
house(like in the entrance area) all the lights should go on and a message to the user and to
user’s closed relatives(registered on the system) is sent. Furthermore the door locks are also
into this system which records all the activities of complete day i.e. who all have entered the
house and with which sort of means( means can be bio-metric lock, card, keys, or passcode).
• Smart home is also known for its increasing efficiency in power consuming which is, when no
human i.e. no movement detected in the room the lights should go off automatically.
• The equipments of the smart home are connected to IOT which leads to users comfort. For
example if the user is approaching the home so before approaching the house he/she turns
on the Air conditioner so that when he/she reaches the home is at the desired temperature.
• Landscape lighting can turn on automatically at sunset and off again at sunrise.
• If the natural light in the room is less than 50%, lights adjust to 50%. If the natural
light is less than 40%, lights adjust to 60% and so on. This help for when shades
are drawn, or on a cloudy day in the middle of the summer.
• Using the room music system itself as the alarm system i.e. we can set at what
time we want to wake up and the music system can play our favourite song to
awake us.
• If the user is deaf, the house lighting will be have as the door bell i.e if anyone
press the door bell switch instead of the bell ringing the lights start blinking and
user gets to know that he/she has guest.
• If there is a leakage detected in the house the user is gets the notification
regarding the same so that he/she can turn off the main valves.
HOW CAN WE ACHIEVE THE
ABOVE NEEDS USING PLC
• PLC (Programmable logic controller) have digital input and output modules along
with analog input and output modules.
• Now the equipments that are to be controlled are connected to the output modules
of PLC. The equipments are classified into two categories analog and digital.
• The analog equipments are connected to analog outputs and in similar way the
digital equipments are connected to digital output.
Analog Digital
Fans Regular lights
A.C Security system
Dimming lights T.V
Washing Machine
Kitchen Appliance
• The automation cannot be achieved without the
feedbacks.
• The feedbacks here in the smart homes are various
types of sensors.
• Sensors used for the same are temperature sensor,
proximity sensor, pressure sensor, touch sensor, etc.
• Sensors are connected to the input modules of the
PLC.
• To communicate with the equipments, HMI(human
machine interface), IPADs, is used replacing the old
mechanical switches.
ADVANTAGE OF USING PLC
• PLC works on ladder diagram language which is much easier
then the other language such as C, C++, python etc.
• Ladder diagram mainly works on the principle of universal
gates.
• Using the real time clock built in plc we can achieve the many
of the applications mention in previous slides eg. the alarm
using music system, automatic lights turn on/off.
• It is robust compared to all other controllers which can
achieve the same.
Thank You
