How are Ecology and Environmental Science similar to, and different from, each other? 100
words or more please
Solution
Ecology deals with the study of interactions between organisms and their habitat/environment or
more broadly – an ecosystem. It includes earth science, nutrient cycles, food chains and webs.
Environmental science also deals with biological aspect of organisms but it also encompasses,
physical and chemical aspects of environment and their effects on different organisms.
Therefore the similarity lies in study of organisms and environment in a broader sense. But
ecology will focus on groups of organisms, specific interactions – food preferences, area
occupancy, species richness, mating habits, predation, migration, adaptation to new
habitats, competition strategies for survival and biodiversity.
Environmental science has more detailed analysis of both abiotic and biotic factors and their
interplay in environment. Examples include- effects of global warming or other major
environmental changes on organisms, sustainability studies, effects of human encroachment on
natural resources, urbanisation , industrialization and its effects on environment.
