Einstein was the first to use the cosmological constant in his 1917 paper. Shortly after, Schrödinger presented a note transposing the cosmological constant term to the right side of the field equations, making it part of the stress-energy tensor. Einstein commented that if Schrödinger intended more than a mathematical convenience, he should describe its properties. Einstein then described what some of those properties might be, such as it behaving as a form of negative pressure - effectively providing the first description of dark energy.
