Hiroshi Miura summarizes how Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) like GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, and QZSS can change mapping. A simple accuracy test was conducted using homemade GNSS receivers and open source software. Results showed meter-level accuracy is possible but centimeter accuracy is needed for precise mapping. Further development of low-cost and easy to use GNSS tools could improve mapping quality.
