How librarians can engage citizens
to use open access contents and open data
as a source for fact-checking
Paola Coppola - Damiano Orrù, Frankfurt am Main, May 10th, 2019
The application context of fake news reachs not only news
but the whole information ecosystem
Fake news takes us back to the initial question
What does it mean to be literate in the 21st century?

...but Trust in social media is decreasing
Foster a basis of
trusting relationship
…Modify the approach to information environment
MIL focuses on different and intersecting competencies to transform people’s
interaction with information and learning environments online and offline. MIL
includes competencies to search, critically evaluate, use and contribute information and
media content wisely; knowledge of how to manage one’s rights online; understanding
how to combat online hate speech and cyberbullying; understanding of the ethical issues
surrounding the access and use of information; and engagement with media and ICTs to
promote equality, free expression and tolerance, intercultural/interreligious dialogue,
peace, etc. MIL is a nexus of human rights of which literacy is a primary right.

Media literacy: our capacity to access,
have a critical understanding of, and interact with the
media has never been as important as in today's
society.
It enables citizens of all ages to navigate the modern
news environment and take informed decisions.
Media literacy is also a tool empowering citizens
as well as raising their awareness and helping
counter the effects of disinformation campaigns
and fake news spreading through digital media.

Change begins at home!
 A public engagement initiative based on MIL practices as
an antitode to misinformation, supporting the citizens in order to:
 make users aware of social networks, chats and blogs
 focus on reliable open access contents and open data
BiblioVerifica: What and Why
 An ongoing conversation between the Library and society.
We started in 2017, in order to foster the general public to
develop debates and analytical reasoning in the interaction and
processing of information, in the openness dimension, without
political propaganda or biased ideology.
BiblioVerifica: What and Why

“Tor Vergata” University with and for societies: the Third Mission
Knowledge is an asset which creates business and value
 “The prevalence of ‘fake news’ and society’s distrust of expert opinion underlines the
need for universities to make themselves even more open and relevant to Society”
(Open Science and its role in universities, LERU 2018)
 “Public Engagement describes the myriad of ways in which the activity and benefits
of higher education and research can be shared with the public. Engagement is by
definition a two-way process, involving interaction and listening, with the goal of
generating mutual benefit“.
(National Co-ordinating Center for PE, UK, 2013)
PE improves the public’s understanding of science, increasing the knowledge and skills of
citizens in order to promote scientific vocations and participation.
Why engage the public
Why engage the public
…a two way process involving interaction and listening
The blog, owing to its contents, it is one of the initiatives with which our library intends
to play an active role in the processes of training and education for long-life learning.
Library embraces the Third Mission and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)of the
UN 2030 Agenda for economic, environmental and social development.

Who are the BiblioVolontari ?
"Librarians take great pride in being the people who are at
the intersection of knowledge and the questions people have.
What we have standing behind us is the knowledge of all humanity,
and yet we haven’t used it in a way in which we’ve changed our actions"
(Elaine Harger, Progressive librarians raise questions about librarianship, 2017)
