How NCEA works
- 2. Introduction NCEA is the main qualification for secondary school kids in New Zealand. NCEA stands for the National Certificate of Educational Achievement It comes in three levels – 1, 2 and 3 Comprised of standards which lead to credits External exams as well as internal assessment
- 3. Setting the standard Subjects are divided up into all the things you need to know – they’re called standards Each standard is worth credits Credits count towards the final qualification Credits accumulate throughout the year Need 80 credits to get an NCEA qualification
- 4. Results Tell you a lot more than just – “NCEA level 1, passed”. Results notice shows your result for each standard N : Not achieved A : Achieved M : Merit E : Excellence
- 5. Merit and Excellence If you get 50 credits with Merit or Excellence, you get a Merit or Excellence endorsement included in your qualification Can be useful if you're doing well in particular courses or subjects
- 6. Course endorsement Tells people you are especially good at a particular subject or course If you get 14 credits with Excellence in a particular course you will have that course ‘endorsed with Excellence’ Good for showing results to people after leaving school – for work or going somewhere else to study.

Planning for your career Good to have an idea where you want to go Make sure the standards you are studying are going to give you the results you need to do what you want to do when you leave school Need to get credits in the standards that will be useful to employers or that the university will expect to see in your results Universities want to see lots of Excellences in your results Try and get as many Excellences or Merits as possible
