The Beginning… The Internet has had a relatively brief, but explosive history. It grew out of an experiment begun in the 1960's by the U.S. Department of Defense. The DoD wanted to create a computer network that would continue to function in the event of a disaster, such as a nuclear war. If part of the network was damaged or destroyed, the rest of the system still had to work. That network was ARPANET , which linked U.S. scientific and academic researchers. It was the forerunner of today's Internet.
World Wide Web A system of Internet servers that support formatted text in HTML. Documents link to each other using hyperlinks. The Web supports various types of graphics, audio, and video files. There are several applications called Web browsers that make it easy to access the information on the World Wide Web. Tim Berners-Lee created the world wide web and http standard on a NeXT Cube computer, 1991 .
Internet Infrastructure The Internet relies a backbone of computers and routers to talk to each other. What is incredible is that a message can leave one computer and travel halfway across the world through several different networks and arrive at another computer in seconds! The routers determine where to send information along the way. Routers are specialized computers that send data packets over the Internet using a variety of pathways.
How it Works… Every computer that is connected to the Internet is part of a network, even the one in your home. When you connect to your ISP, you become part of their network. The ISP may then connect to a larger network and become part of their network. The Internet is simply a network of networks.
