Engage the attention of students, children, employees, and other learners with this puzzling
review game.
1. Choose a topic and/or concept. Keep the emphasis narrow--between five and ten
minutes of playing time.
2. Create multiple choice style questions for each subtopic or concept. For example, If
federalism is the sharing of powers between local and central governments, write the letter
“R”. If not, write the letter “Y”.
3. Include one professional and/or high quality image related to each subtopic or concept.

How to Create a
Mystery Review
by Jesse Bluma
4. Choose a mystery word related to the overall topic of your mystery review game, such
as reformer for The Reformation, julienne for Culinary Skills, or kicking for a physical
education review.
5. Assign each correct answer a letter within your related word. If a player chooses all the
correct answers they will be able to spell out reformer, julienne, kicking, or whatever
mystery word you choose.
6. Prepare directions to instruct players about the concept of the game, the rules--if they
may use any resources, time limit, etc. Save the mystery word to the end of the review--
then ask players if they can spell out the mystery word.
7. Prepare an answer sheet to show the players at the end of the game with the correct
answers, corresponding letters, and the mystery word spelled by those letters.
8. Cite your sources of information and images.
See the following slides for an example or to use as a review of The Reformation.
