How to Design and Create
Mobile Friendly Surveys
FluidSurveys Webinars by
Rick Penwarden and Sean O’Dacre
What we’ll be Covering:
1. Conducting mobile surveys
2. The mobile revolution
3. How to launch a successful survey (mobile friendly!)
Different Ways to Conduct Mobile Surveying
• In-Person Surveys
• Kiosk Surveys
• Real-Time Observational Surveys
• Offline Surveying (Remote Locations)
We’re Living in a Mobile World
• 7 billion cell phone subscriptions worldwide!
• Mobile-broadband subscriptions have reached 2.3 billion globally!
Developed Countries
• In the Developed World mobile-broadband devices will be owned by
84% of the population. (21% in 2007).
• Why?
• Online Social Media
• Mobile capabilities
• Proliferation of Wi-Fi
• Low cost of Data Plans
Developing World
• In the Developing World, mobile-broadband is projected to more than
double over the course of the year (11.5% to 26%).
• Why?
• Large Rural Populations
• Price of Landline
• Need for Information
• Pressure from NGOs
• International Telecommunications Union
(United Nations)
Who Uses Smartphones?
• Two main groups of people use smartphones:
• Youth and Young Adults (14-30 year olds)
• Business Professionals
• Computers becoming obsolete:
• 2010 smartphone sales surpassed desktop
devices.
• Mobile internet usage is predicted to overtake
desktop internet usage in 2015.
More Bad News for Desktop Surveys
• Mobile Devices are taking over email:
• 47% of all emails are now opened on a mobile device
(Email Analytics, April 2014)
• 70% of cellular email checkers admitted to
immediately deleting emails that didn’t render
well on a mobile device!
The 3 Key to Future Surveying Success
• Mobile Friendly Survey Design
• Mobile Friendly Questions Types
• Mobile Responsive platform
Avoiding Slow Navigation Times
• Computers have spoiled respondents’ patience!
• Rule of Thumb: 5 questions per page (Max. 10)
• Limit your number of options (Max: 20 options per question)
Keep it Fast, Easy and Interactive!
• Mobile respondents are on the go and busy!
• Optimize completion rates by:
• 5 minutes or less
• Simple to answer questions
• And interactive styling
Less Open-Ended Questions
• Open-ended questions are a lead cause of mobile drop outs for 2
reasons:
• Certain mobile devices are difficult to type with.
• Open-ended questions require critical thinking and unique responses.
• Instead give clear options that are:
• Clear
• Straightforward
• Well-Organized
Forget the Bells and Whistles
• Mobile capabilities differ dramatically compared to computers!
• Careful using above and beyond features (images, links, pictures, etc.)
• Usually its best to stay as simple as possible.
Pretest Separately on Mobile!
Go Outside the Computer Comfort Zone
• Experiment with the mobile options available
to you! Look specifically for:
• Mobile friendly question formats
• Responsive Design
