Another Idea to Engage Your Reader
• Are you a manager?
Foundations to building a successful team.
– Trust
– Respect
– Empowerment
– Results
• Are you looking for an accounting position?
Consider “talking” about how processes are critical to
establish accuracy.
• Most important is to engage your reader with
something about your professional insights in a
personable tone.
11
• Follow your monologue with sets of keywords that
will help recruiters (and others) find you when they
search LinkedIn.
• Label your sets of keywords to paint a clear picture
of who you are and what you do.
• Labels might include:
– Leadership or Collaboration Style
– Industries
– Strengths
– Core Competencies
– Software (or programming languages)
Profile Basics: Summary Section: Keywords 12
Beware of using
overused words.
Experience Section
Keep talking.
13
Profile Basics: Experience Section
• Tell your audience about each position in a brief,
succinct paragraph. Identify the highlights of the
position that helps the reader understand the real
value of your contribution.
• Follow your position description with 3 or 4 bullets
that quantify (if possible) the results of you work.
Here’s an example…
14
Profile Basics: Experience Section Example
Training Director
Company Name
(1999 – 2006)
The highlights of this position included the development of 6 blended curricula
for a high profile company-wide IT project management training initiative. The
2-year project included a budget of $2.5MM and the collaboration with global
partners including India and Brazil.
Results:
Two year, post implementation metrics indicated:
• For 620 senior project managers team health increased by 34%.
• IT projects that were “on time, on budget, and in scope” increased by 12%.
• Project manager attrition decreased by 21%.
15
Recommendations are critical!
• If you don’t have any recommendations on LinkedIn,
try to get some.
– Colleagues
– Former colleagues
– Friends (personal references)
– Your references for your job search
– Former teachers (graduates, early career)
• How to get a reference:
– Write one!
16
Results Tracking
Is it working…
Who’s viewed your profile?
17
Track your Results
• Check “Who’s viewed your profile” on a regular
basis.
• It’s important to be found by the right people.
• Are you being found by:
– Industry leaders?
– Recruiters?
– Human Resource professionals?
– Hiring managers in companies where you have
applied?
If yes…excellent work! (If not…please call me.)
18
Track your results: Here are examples.
• These are some examples of what others have
experienced using this approach.
