Principles of newspaper design The basics of planning a page
Every design starts with an idea  The idea can come from: Another newspaper or magazine Inside the designer’s head Anywhere
Every page starts with a dummy A dummy is a blank page with columns on it. The designer sketches on the dummy where the stories, headlines and photos will go.
A dummy is required! You wouldn’t build a house without a plan. You wouldn’t play a game without planning the plays. You shouldn’t design a page without a dummy.
A dummy will get you from this: To this:
You start with a blank dummy.
Choose 1-3 stories for the page. Make a list of the stories, headlines, photos and other elements for the page.
Draw in the stories in a module on the page.
Now open up a new Pagemaker or InDesign document. Place the stories, photos, headlines, etc. on the page by following the dummy.
You’ve gone from a dummy to a page. Dummy Finished page
