HOW TO PREPARE FOR GD & INTERVIEW by : DR. T.K. JAIN AFTERSCHO ☺ OL centre for social entrepreneurship sivakamu veterinary hospital road bikaner 334001 rajasthan, india FOR – CSE & PGPSE STUDENTS (CSE & PGPSE are free online programmes open for all, free for all) mobile : 91+9414430763
WHAT IS GD ? GD = group discussion the basic objective here is to assess your communication skills, team building skills, conceptual skills, level of confidence, ability to understand group dynamics.
What is communication skill? Are you able to speak out comfortably in a group. Are you able to speak out your views, which impresses others are you able to listen to others and then speak on those points.
Most common mistakes – that people make - They argue a lot - they dont listen to others - they dont even understand the issues / topic and yet they just want to speak out. - they dont have facts / knowledge – yet they speak out - they give personal examples / or exceptional examples and try to generalise (which should not be given)
What is team building skill? Can you encourage others to speak out? Can you create a good climate - where everyone feels comfortable? Can you create a collaborative environment instead of a competitive environment? Can you make the ultimate goal clear to the entire group? Can you remind the group of its goals and check it if it deviates from the goals?
Mistakes that people make - they try to become leader, in the process, they unnecessary dominate others - they try to show off their knowledge (which is actually not there) - they dont allow others to speak and participate - they form small groups within a group - they avoid working for the entire group – and take up their personal agenda
Boost up your confidence level Most people get nervous at the time of GD & Interview try to speak slowly, comfortably, maintaining proper body language (eye contact with others, use of open palm gesture) breathe slowly to relax and stay at ease
Mistakes that people make ... They try to mug up their points and try to speak out all the points in one go they get nervour and try to speak out – when it is not required they get emotional – and even burst out
What is group dynamics ? When people are in group, there is bound to be group dynamics. There are factors, which distort the behaviour of people in the group. We must understand these forces and try to behave reasonably. Example : group think
What is group think? It is one such example of group dynamics. If a dominant member of a group proposes something, other persons say yes – even if they really dont agree. Soon everyone agrees – because there is fear in the mind, why to disagree and invite peer pressure. Thus group think removes the possibility of free participation by people in the group. AVOID IT
How to dissent ? Remember a GD is not a debate and it is not a platform to argue and fight out. It is a platform to form consensus, generate new ideas, encourage others to brainstorm and create a unique solution. If you dont agree to others, dissent, but dont try to argue or criticise others. Put your ideas in a way, which seems reasonable and factual to others.
Types of GD ? Controlled (where moderator gives everyone 2 minutes of time) self regulated – where group on its own decide about group format and discussion schedule issue / problem based - where at the end of GD, there must be a solution to the problem Current issue based – where the purpose is just to discuss current issues case situation - where a case situation is given and the group discusses the possible solutions
What you must avoid in GD? Dont be aggressive (be assertive) dont be argumentative dont be emotional dont hurt others feelings dont take up religious / personal matters dont talk to individual – talk to the entire group dont interrupt others – let them finish dont speak very fast / dont be verbose
How to proceed? You get 2 minutes to prepaer – use these 2 minutes to jot down all the important points. Think beyond box – find all the possibilities generate new ideas from others' ideas – when others are giving some points have a very positive and constructive framework in your mind – so that you really try to look for solution dont behave like Trade union leaders / our parliamentarians (they break tables – you dont have to)
What to do when you get a very difficult topic ? Be positive and speak out the following lines : “I invite all of you to share your views on this topic” you can encourage others to speak out – and draw your points from what others have spoken
Example topic : should higher education be commercialised? Yes – because - this is necessary to have huge investments in education sector – this is the only way to attract entrepreneurs in this sector No : Because : - it will become a business – it will distort our next generation – our values will die – every institute will only think about raising fees / taking more admission etc. - not on quality
Points to remember .. Try to understand that you have to look at both the sides – positive and negative , favour and against – and take a very balanced persepective - it is not a debate – that you take up only one side.
WHAT IS INTERVIEW ? It is a personal face to face discussion to know about the liking, objectives, career goals, and competencies of a person
Frequent quesitons – prepare for them in advance What is your career goal ? Why have you come here? Why do you want to work / study / apply here? How will this organisation help you in achieving your goals of life? How will you contribute to this organisation / institution ? What are your achievements ? What did you learn from your last job / last school / college / family?
Most common mistakes in interveiw - dont go without preparation – preparation includes thorough study about the proposed vacancy / course and the expectations of the organisation / institute - dont go without proper self analysis – know your strengths, weaknesses, opportunity, threats and identify your unique capabilities before you go.
Mistakes that everyone makes... - dont argue – the interviewers just want to check your emotional management – they might tell you that you are wrong – when you are actually right – they just want to check your ability to respond - dont just give up – when you are asked for some difficult situaion - share your achievements openly and frankly and your capabilities in solving the problem - dont make false claims which you cant fulfill
Important trics for interview... Look at all the members of the interview panel maintain eye contact with everyone carry extra copy of your biodata and your credentials – including photo / copies of your achievements / performance / articles present your ideas assertively
What is true success? True success cant come in a day – keep developing yourself – you will achieve it. Be a well read, well informed, and analytical person avoid domatic stand. Be open, positive and willing to share your past....
How to prepare biodata ? Present your career goal, your achievements, your capabilities and your ideas at the top let the interviewer come to know about your true potential. If you hide your achievements / ideas / perspectives – how will the other person come to know about you?? be an open person – willing to share the journey of life with others....
Be calculative and practical ... You must have reason -for what you are doing. If you are doing a course or a job, you must have a reason for it – and the reason must be able to relate your decision to the ultimate career goal of your life – and it should look realistic. Dont just do something -because everyone is doing it ... have your own reasons for it...
Be critical in your analysis ... It is better to be critical now – then repent later. ... if you are too ambitious or too unrealistic – it is not advisable... example : a fresh graduate was doing MBA spending Rs. 10 lakh, I asked about his plans – he said he will get campus placement & salary of Rs. 50000 per month – which looked unreasonable to me – as the person was not really clear about why that person was doing MBA and what he would get afterwards & why should a company spend so much money on that person???
My word..... My purpose here is to give a few ideas about how you can face your GD and interviews. Constant practice is required for this. Go with positive spirit. Please pass this presentation to all those who might need it. Let us spread knowledge as widely as possible. I welcome your suggestions. I also request you to help me in spreading social entrepreneurship across the globe – for which I need support of you people – not of any VIP. With your help, I can spread the ideas – for which we stand....
