How to record a voice
  Trent Ryan Katzenberger
Hello! My name is Trent Ryan Katzenberger. I am a
student in the Introduction to Music Production
class presented by Coursera.org just like yourself
and my lesson this week will be a tutorial on how
to record voice. It's a fairly straight forward
process.
Make sure your mic and computer are handy as
well as any device or devices you may need to hook
them up to each other. If you have a USB
microphone plug it into your PC or if you have a
microphone that needs to be run through an
interface of some kind attach the microphone to
the interface and then connect that to your
computer.
Next confirm that your computer has recognized
your hardware and open up your DAW. Make sure
that your DAW also recognizes your equipment. I
am using Ableton Live 8. If you go into preferences
you can check if it has registered your equipment.
There should be a similar option in your program of
choice. The next screen is an example of what it
should look like if it is working properly. The
section that I have circled is what indicates that it
has recognized my microphone.
How to record voice
Create a new audio track in your DAW and bring
your cursor to the beginning of your track and
hit the play button and then record. Sing or
speak into your mic and when you’re done give
it a couple of seconds and hit the pause button.
This should stop the track. The next slide will
again be an example of this in Ableton.
How to record voice
Now listen to what you have recorded. Make
sure it turned out like you wanted it to. At this
point you have a couple of options. You can
either use what you have now as a clip and edit
it and save it as a project to work on later or you
can render it out as an audio file if it is complete
and ready for distribution! Either way you are
done! Congratulations! You've successfully
record the human voice!
