Impact measurement: why and
how to do it
Tues 17th May, 1300-1330
International House, SW9 7QE
Agenda
 Why measure social impact?
 CAN’s approach to measuring social impact
 Worked example: Lambeth Community Hub Network (LCHN)
 Q&A

3
CAN supports social entrepreneurs to
build sustainable businesses by providing space to grow,
capital and business support
Why measure social impact?
CAN Invest helps organisations to measure, demonstrate and
enhance their impact. Impact studies can and should:
 Serve as a powerful demonstration of the full value of the
services in economic and social terms
 Maintain and attract further support from customers, funders
and other stakeholders
 Enable you to refine what you do

Social impact measurement - 3 purposes
How to measure social impact (CAN’s approach*)
 Involve stakeholders
 Understand what changes
 Value the things that really matter
 Do not over-claim
 Be transparent to ensure quality
* Fully compatible with the 7 principles of SROI measurement: http://www.thesroinetwork.org/what-is-sroi.

The virtuous cycle to becoming impact-led
A. Identify &
engage
stakeholders
B. Understand
what changes
C. Evidence
material
outcomes
D. Report to
internal and
external
audiences
E. Implement
impact-led
strategy

The LCHN Example (1/3)
Basic steps
1. Engage with stakeholders to identify key outcomes
– Challenge: Engaging with all relevant stakeholders
– Example: Finding time to have meetings/calls to discuss impact
2. Develop indicators to measure outcomes and social value
– Challenge: Borough level indicators vs. organisation level outcomes
– Example: Support and protection – vulnerable adults & children (common) vs other
disadvantaged adults & children (not necessarily defined as vulnerable)
3. Create reporting framework and surveys
– Challenge: Agreeing counter-factual for impact
– Example: To what extent are job outcomes directly attributable to each hub?
4. (Collect data!)
9
The LCHN Example (2/3)
Analysing and presenting the data
 Use the Impact Reporting Framework to demonstrate LCHN’s social value
 The guidance document helps to analyse and present the data.
 Examples:
1. Beneficiaries supported
– Example: 27 people at risk of offending used the hub this year
2. Demographic data
– Example: We worked with 59 people aged 65 or over, this was 78% of our user base
10
The LCHN Example (2/3)
Analysing and presenting the data
3. Beneficiaries achieving
outcomes
– Example: We have helped 40
people to become healthier
this year (Lambeth’s
Community Plan Outcome 4:
‘People are healthier for
longer’)
4. Social value created
– Example: helping 40 people to
improve their mental state
(‘healthier for longer’) delivers
£20,658 in social value for
different stakeholders
11
Suggested next steps for LCHN
 Each hub:
– Collect data, and use the framework to estimate LCHN social impact
value
– Nominate an Impact Champion to help with ongoing management
– Find research volunteers to undertake the ‘heavy lifting’
 LCHN:
– Quarterly peer feedback on functionality and use of the tool
– Engagement with Council and other stakeholders
12
Q&A
 Any questions?
