Where do we learn
    how to
 communicate?
How would you best
    describe the
communication tactic
 used in your home?
 Avoid

 Be
  Defensive
 Being Right

 Mind Reading
 Blame Game

 Win Every
  Arguement
Proverbs 13:10
Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is
found in those who take advice.

                   James 4:1-2
What causes fights and quarrels among you?
Don’t they come from your desires that battle
within you? You want something but don’t get
it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have
what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do
not have, because you do not ask God.
What is your
Communication
   Style?
Why is
Communication so
   Important?
• Passes information along
• Foundation of good
  relationships
• Helps you get what you need.
• Gives you self-esteem.
• Helps you think better.
• Makes peaceful
  communities.
Tips on How to Talk
 to your Parents so
   They’ ll Listen
#1—Talk About
Everyday Stuff, & do
    it Every Day
• Find something trivial to
  chat about each day.

• It’s never too late to start.
#2—Communication
is a Two Way Street
A. Be Clear and
              Direct
• Find a good time to talk to them
• Plan your strategy
• Ask everyone involved to please
  listen before responding.
Proverbs 18:13
     He who answers before
listening- that is his folly and his
             shame.

        James 1:19
My dear brothers and sisters,
be quick to listen, slow to
speak and slow to get angry.
B. Be Honest

• Keep the focus on what you
    want and how you feel
• If you're honest, your parents
will be likely to believe what
    you say.
• Earn their trust.
Ephesians 4:15
 Instead, speaking the truth in
love, we will in all things grow
up into him who is that Head,
        that is, Christ.

      Proverbs 24:26
An honest answer is like a kiss
         on the lips.
C. Try to
            Understand their
            Point of View
• Ask them what their concerns
    are.
• Don’t assume you know what
    they’ re thinking.
• Ask them to help you understand
    why.
D. Try not to
            Argue and Whine

• It won’t get you anywhere
• Be respectful
• This will show them a sign of
    maturity and gain you respect
Bonus Tips
1. Use the sandwich method
2. Avoid statements like “ You
     never” or “ You always”
3. Never run off in the middle of
     a conversation.
4. Yelling doesn’t make people want
     to change their minds.
5. Never say, “ I don’t love you
     anymore” , or “ I hate you”
6. Try to always make eye contact
     when speaking.
What if Talking to
your Parents Doesn’t
       Work?
Gracefully accepting a
 no can help you get
  more yeses in the
       future.
Ephesians 4:2-3
 2 Be completely humble and
gentle; be patient, bearing with
one another in love. 3 Make
every effort to keep the unity of
the Spirit through the bond of
              peace.
If you can’t talk to
your parent, seek out
other adults you can
        trust.
