Creative Commons licenses permits educators to legally retain, reuse,
revise, remix and redistribute creative works as long as they follow the
different license conditions.
Remember whether you create a collection or adaptation, always do
it from both a pedagogical and copyright perspective.
Creative Commons provides six possible licenses. If you choose to use a
CC licensed work, you must abide by the terms of its license.
Creative Commons License
1) CC-BY: requires attribution be given to the creator
2) CC-BY-SA: requires attribution and that any adaptions be shared
under the same license.
3) CC-BY-NC: requires attribution and prohibits commercial use
4) CC-BY-ND: requires attribution and prohibits the sharing of
adaptations
5) CC-BY-NC-SA: requires attibution, prohibits commercial use, and
requires that any adaptations be shared under the same license
6) CC-BY-NC-ND: requires attribution, prohibits commercial use, and
forbids the sharing of adaptations
The Six Licenses of Creative Commons
• When you choose to use a Creative Commons Licensed
work, you can do one of three things, depending on
the license:
1) Use it as it is
2) Modify it, or
3) Combine it with other works
Using Creative Commons Licensed Works
• Collection is the combination of 2
or more pre-existing creative works
to create a new copyrightable
work.
• Each of the separate works stays
independent in themselves and
together form a collective whole.
• If you create a collection, you only
own the copyright to your
arrangement of the works,and
whatever original material you add,
not the works themsleves.
What is Collection ?
Adaptation, also is known as remix or derivative
work is created by recasting, transforming or
adapting existing creative works to create a new
original work which in itself can be protected by
copyright.
Examples :
• translation of a novel from one language to
another,
• the creation of a screenplay based on a novel.
• Synching music with moving images in a video
• Editing images, e.g. adding text, cropping, etc.
What is Adaptation?
Before you mix two Creative Commons licensed works together, you
must first find out if their licenses are compatible. This is because not
all Creative Commons licenses can be mixed with each other. If Creative
Commons licenses are not compatible, the works cannot be combined.
License Compatibility - Licensing an Adaptation
If you choose to adapt a single Creative Commons licensed work, the license you
use on the product of your newly created work must be compatible with the
original work’s license. Use this chart to determine which licenses are compatible.

Licensing an Adapted Work
If you choose to combine
more than one CC licensed
work into something new, the
two works licenses must be
compatible, and the license
you apply to the newly
created work must cover all
of the original terms.

Licensing a Remix of Multiple Works
Whether you choose to use Creative Commons work as it is, compile a
collection, or create an adaption, you must always provide attribution
to the original work and its creator.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
This attribution statement is the equivalent of a citation.
Attributing Creative Commons Licensed Works
TASL Formula
When providing attribution, do your best to provide the following four
elements :
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
• T = Title
• A = Author
• S = Source (link to the resource)
• L = License (The type of Creative Commons License)
For example, this presentation included a Collection of My illustration
on Flickr website. The attribution statements for the included works are
shown here:
