Editor's Notes

  • #3: I was born in 1974 … when women’s fashion looked like this …
  • #4: and my mom’s weekends were filled with parties to try and sell this stuff … I love Tupperware!
  • #5: It was 3 years before Star Wars … and it would be several more before I realized Luke and Lei are twins!
  • #6: and it was 5 years after Star Trek ended … but I had the reruns to watch! I love Tribbles …
  • #7: This is mine … his name is Spot …
  • #8: … and he’s always getting in trouble with Darth Vader!
  • #9: My dad was a geek … before being a geek was cool. He was an early adopter of technology on the home front … we had a VCR when Betamax was still in … well …beta mode. And this was my first introduction into stereo sound. (need pic of me and daddy)
  • #11: This was my first computer … tell the JP story ;-) And the digital camera we had at my high school … and in 1994 … tell the MKTG 304 story … that later launched me into ed tech
  • #12: So … why am I telling you all of this? Why am I telling you a story about how I was raised? What’s the true purpose of my story?
  • #13: I just told you my personal story … as a way to introduce myself, but also to give you the chance to connect with me and, to an extent, the topic at hand. I tell stories all the time … as educators, most of us are probably natural story tellers, even if we don’t realize it. We all have experience … from jobs … from living … that we can share with our students. But, why is this important?
  • #15: Some of the first lessons we learn as children come in the form of stories. Little Red riding hood reinforced the lesson not to talk to strangers …
  • #16: Shreck and Fiona teach us that what’s on the outside isn’t nearly as important as what’s on the inside …
  • #17: And the list goes on … but, we remember the stories, and we remember the lessons. Our students are no different. Telling them the good, bad, and ugly of their chosen field to reinforce a lecture or discussion topic will go a long way in helping them learn … beyond remembering facts.
  • #18: I tell my stories with slides because the photos or graphics I use help reinforce the story itself … and may help the student connect better with the story … or better connect the story with his/her own life or career plans. For me, this comes naturally … I’ve never had to think too hard about what photos work with what parts my story. For you, that may or may not be the case … so we start with a storyboard.
  • #19: Read the slides … to reinforce just how boring it really is. Ask how many were trying to read the slides while I was reading them aloud … does that work? What do you really remember?
  • #20: Stories aren’t always going to work in the classroom situation … sometimes we have to lecture, to present lists, to show data … but we can break that up with our stories. On day one of class, we can tell our story as a way to introduce ourselves … it makes us human. I’ve told a lot of stories about event planning whoops moments. I regularly share my experiences both in career and in life as way to reinforce the lesson.
  • #21: images - I’m a fan of fewer images or animated images that a lot of them on a screen at once. I showed you a few things today that work well, but plopping a bunch of images on a slide with no connection makes no sense to the audience. i prefer stock photos over clipart unless my theme lends itself to something more cartoonish.
  • #23: It’s a bad idea to open up PowerPoint or Keynote first … fight that temptation … at least until you’re comfortable with this process. The storyboard allows you to see everything at once, in front of you, before you get to building anything.
  • #24: The first page of my storyboard for this presentation … and you can see that I added a few extra slides once I actually created the presentation to help further cement my geekiness :-)
  • #25: Here’s the one you’re going to use today …
