Introduction:
This unit is designed for a twelfth grade honors British literature class. These students are extremely
gifted and will be taking the AP exam for college credit towards the end of the school year. The
students will be learning about the dynamic and static characters in the book. They will be identifying
how the dynamic character changes throughout the story and how the static characters stay the same.
This is important because these students are undergoing major changes in their lives at this point; they
will be attending college next year and taking a big leap into the somewhat unknown. I want the
students to be able to see the difference between change and what is stagnant. The students will also
be able to chart the progression, or lack thereof in the main characters. The students have prior
knowledge of this short story and have had lessons that go over dynamic and static character traits. I
do have two ESL students in my classroom that I will be tinkering parts of the activities to

tested students at the end of the year and at the beginning of the next year in order to see if the
summer months caused this achievement gap to widen. She found that gaps in skills grew quickly

Can Schooling Contribute to a More Just Society by Michael A. Apple is about how he thinks
education reform should progress. The article begins with a story of a child crying because he must
repeat fourth grade. Apple tells us that the child, Joseph worked hard and improved over the course of
the year, however he failed two classes. Based on the school s rules, Joseph must repeat the year.
Ultimately, holding students like Joseph back make the school look like they are really trying to
educate their students (Apple 353 354). However, he says we do not exist on a level playing field

Betrayal is the action of deception against one s country, group, or a person. This action is noted both
in novels and in the real world. The novel The Adventures of Ulysses by Bernard Evslin describes a
scene in which two men betray Ulysses by opening a bag of winds. In the real world, a man named
Edward Snowden betrays his country by revealing classified information he was entrusted with. The
two situations of betrayal are justified and not justified throughout the texts they are mentioned in. In
the novel, The Adventures of Ulysses, Ulysses was guarding a bag of winds given to him by Aeolus.
He stood awake day and night, protecting the bag from the wandering minds of his crew, but when his
eyes gave out, two men took their chances and opened the bag. Though, the consequences that the
whole crew experienced cost them dearly, they had reasons for doing this. Predominantly, the two men
were tricked by the god of the sea, Poseidon, to open the bag. The god made sounds of clicking
trinkets and it lured the men to open the bag since they were profoundly greedy and have been battling
in a war for ten years. On page 36 of the novel, it states, Then Poseidon, swimming invisibly
alongside, clinked his golden armlets. The men heard the clinking and thought it came from the bag.
This demonstrates that the trickery of Poseidon encouraged the men to open the bag since they were
vulnerable the sound of trinkets. Additionally, Ulysses never told his crew what the bag contained and
why they shouldn t open it. If he did, the whole situation could have been avoided. All the same,
Ulysses was a trusted man and leader. The two men who betrayed him should have known better than
to doubt that their leader wouldn t have shared if it were real gold. Primarily, Ulysses had been the one
making the right decisions all the time and has gotten his crew out of trouble when needed. On page
36, in the text, it states, It is true, said the first, that he has always been generous. He shared the spoils
of Troy. This testifies that Ulysses had never kept anything to himself, he always shared his riches

Negative Effects Of Working On Teenagers
Work! Work! Work! Work! In today s society, teenagers are seeking jobs to earn money even though
they have school. Sometimes they are forced to get a job because they need to help their parents for
their financial problems. It is very common to teenagers to get a job at a young age. It did not really
change back then about children s working at such a young age when they should be focusing on their
education. Getting a job is everyone s dream because they can earn money and get experiences. Avery
Neumark quote says that, Never too early to start. Anything can happen any time, this quote relates to
teenagers because they need the head start to do something in life. Sometimes the job that they have
pushes teenagers to do their best. Working early has both positive and negative impact to young
adults. However, that is their only way to survive in this world is to get a part time job to at least help
them. Having a job help teenagers to be on time to avoid consequences, expansion of knowledge, and

ICAP Class Reflection
For my ICAP unit I wrote my lessons on living and nonliving things and how they adapt to their
environment. My teacher assigned this topic to me. I am glad my teacher assigned me a science topic.
This school focuses a lot on math and language arts so science gets left out a lot so I am glad I could
teach a fun lesson in the classroom. My unit fits in with what they were learning during language arts.
There would be times my lesson ended up being a preview of what they would learn or would be a
review. It worked out well to have them read or hear about different animals and environments then
later do an activity. It helped them learn the facts in many different ways. Something else I had to
consider while writing lessons are what they already learned. Living and nonliving things are
something that is covered in every grade. I had to make sure I was building on what they already
