Who Is The Monster In Beowulf
A monster named Grendel threatens the life of the Danes. He would go to Herot (mead hall of the
Danes) and would gorge on all of the bodies. He would kill all of these men for years. One day,
Hrothgar (king of the Danes) finds Herot empty. Higlac (king of the Geats) hears how Hrothgar is
suffering with the monster named Grendel. Then Beowulf (Higlac s nephew), hears about what has
happened in the land of the Danes. Beowulf then sets off to the land of the Geats by boat, but taking
the best of the best men with him to fight Grendel. Beowulf arrives with him men to the Dane s land.
Beowulf is greeted by Wulfgar and is escorted to Herot where Hrothgar is waiting for Beowulf.
Beowulf tells his men that he will not use weapons against

Physics Of The M N + 1 Ax N
The M n+1 AX n , or MAX phases are ternary carbides or nitrides with a hexagonal crystal structure,
wherein the M n+1 X n layers are interleaved with A layers. M is an early transition metal, A is an A
group element, which is mostly 13 and 14 groups and X is carbon or nitrogen. MAX phases exhibit a
unique combination of properties arising from their atomic bonding and structural characteristics
which situates them on the boundary between metals and ceramic bridging the gap between them [1
6]. Due to the metallic nature of the M and A elements, MAX phases tend to be relatively soft and
readily machinable (due to weak
M A bonds), with good thermal shock resistance as well as damage tolerance, and in addition are
excellent thermal and electrical conductors. Conversely, being carbides and nitrides they exhibit
typical ceramic properties and are good refractory materials, are very stable thermodynamically at
high temperatures, have good chemical resistance and have relatively low thermal expansion
coefficients. These properties make MAX phases amenable for use in the automotive and aerospace
industry[2, 3, 5].
The n in the M n+1 AX n phases, denotes the number of M layers sandwiched between the A layers.
Researchers have reported M 2 AX, M 3 AX 2 , and M 4 AX 3 phases, which refer to the 211, 312,
and 413 phases, respectively. In 1967, Ti 3 SiC 2 and Ti 3 GeC 2 were first synthesized by Jeitschko

Bicyclic Lactone Lab Report
In order to generate a bicyclic lactone in this experiment, a Diels Alder adduct was produced. The
bicyclic lactone to be generated was cis 1,3,3a,4,5,7a Hexahydro 5 methyl 3 oxo 4 isobenzofuran
carboxylic Acid and was produced using a Diels Alder reaction. The product was also analyzed
quantitatively using percent yield. To prepare the Diels Alder adduct 0.40 g of 2,4 hexadien 1 ol was
added to a flask, then 5.00 mL of toluene and 0.40 g of maleic anhydride were added to the flask in
that order. The mixture was warmed and stirred to induce a reaction. The reaction progress was
monitored using a TLC plate with 30:70 hexane used as the mobile phase and silica gel as the
stationary phase. The TLC plate revealed a new spot for the crude product, indicating the reaction had
begun. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After 10 minutes the reaction liquid was separated from the solid using a vacuum filtration system and
toluene. The product was stored and dried until week 2 of the experiment. The product was weighed to
be 0.31 g. Percent yield was calculated to be 38.75%. IR spectra data was conducted for the two
starting materials and of the product. Melting point determination was performed on the product and
proton NMR spectrum was given. The IR spectrum revealed peaks at 1720 cm 1, which indicated the
presence of a lactone group, and 1730 cm 1, representing a functional group of a carboxylic acid
(C=O), and 3300cm 1, indicating the presence of an alcohol group (O H). All three peaks correspond
with the desired product. A second TLC using the same mobile and stationary phase as the first was
performed and revealed Rf Values of 0.17 and 0.43for the product. The first value was unique to the
product indicating that the Diels Alder reaction was successful. The other Rf value of 0.43 matched
that of maleic anhydride indicating some

Lakhous, the readers become exposed to the thoughts of the two protagonists. Through simple
language, we are able to relate to both Christian/Issa and Safia/Sofia. Despite their circumstances, the
themes of ambition and dreams are rather prominent. However, the dreams/ambitions are only
fulfilled through several acts of self sacrifice. Through the use of a split narrative, Lakhous employs
foreshadowing in order to create suspense of the impending romance. When the readers first meet Issa
and Sofia, their thoughts are continuously filled with hope and optimism regarding their dreams and
ambitions. For Issa, he seems rather ambitious to begin his mission. He focuses mainly on blending
into his surroundings, but admits that sometimes I forget the part I am playing (47). From this, it is
evident that Issa constantly gets distracted during his mission. He becomes engulfed with the stories
and culture surrounding him, such as the hopes/goals of his fellow tenants. While Issa is ambitious, he
is cautious when it comes to dreaming as he tells Saber: Be careful, too ... Show more content on

mysterious aura around each character. From the mysterious aura and hopefulness of the
dreams/ambition surrounding both characters, the readers are left in suspense of their eventual
meeting. This anticipation is strengthened when Akram is mentioned in Sofia s narrative (56) after

The Impact Of Poor Nutrition On The Student S Achievements.
The Impact of Poor Nutrition On the Student s Achievements
Abstract
Chapter1: Introduction
The ability of the students in the schools to learn is being hindered by foods that are widely available
in the schools which have affected the academic performance. The state of boards in the schools have
been in a mission to improve the education systems in schools which in return will improve the
academic performance of the students. To achieve this, they have to find the reasons as to why the
students do not perform well or the things that hinder the performance of the students in schools. One
of the areas that should be looked at is the kind of nutritional substances that are eaten by most of the
school going children. There are national and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These programs have been of great benefit to the students because their school attendance has
improved and their academic performance have improved. Poor nutrition in students does not only
affect their academic performance but also affects their social skills, cognitive development, learning
and social behavior. However, there are some steps of actions that can be taken that will help to solve
the problem of poor nutrition in schools. Some of this action may involve central themes including
creativity, collaboration, and patience. Fixing the issue of poor nutrition among students will also help
in tacking the health constituents that majority of the students suffer from such as obesity,
undernourishment, and even eating disorders which have raised concern in the United States of
America.
The issue of providing students from low income families with nutritious meals has been debated for
many years. As from the period of the Great Depression some schools started to offer their students
with lunch and this had two major goals. The first goal of the school lunch program was to ensure that
students from low income families did not have poor nutrition by giving them meals with nutritional
benefits. On the other hand, the second goal of the school lunch program was to make good use of the
surplus agricultural commodities that the government had bought from

Corporate Crime Wave
The Global Economy s Corporate Crime Wave discusses world corporate crime and how the influence
of money corrupts politics and the economic markets. The power of corporations on our culture is
interesting and the depth of corruption, is in moments implausible. Jeffery D. Sachs is a professor and
a writer. Sachs writes articles for Project Syndicate, a world s opinion website and has written books
that include: The End of Poverty, Common Wealth and The Age of Sustainable Development. Sachs
background provides him with the knowledge and capability to write an educated article on the
possibility of the corporate crime wave. The purpose of this article is to educate American Citizen s on
corporation s power and influence on the government. Our figures in power and leaders in America
are aware of corruption in corporations, yet they sweep it under the rug, fire someone to appease the
people without divulging ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After all corporations are considered persons. One of the examples Sachs references in the article is
regarding our former Vice President (VP) Dick Cheney; prior to his role as V.P. he was Chief
Executive Officer (CEO) of Halliburton. During Cheney s employment with Halliburton they were
engaged in bribery efforts with Nigerian officials, with hopes of gaining access to Africa s oil fields.
The Nigerian government charged Halliburton with bribery and the case was settled for thirty five
million dollars, with no repercussions to Cheney and little to no awareness in the United States media.
This was a drop in the bucket. Sachs is educating citizens that there is a wildfire spreading and most if
not all corporate crime flies under the radar of most Americans. Corporate corruption is out of control
for two main reasons. First, big companies are now multinational, while governments remain national.

Hate Crimes
Racism Hate Crimes in America Blacks were introduced to American soil during the 17th and 18th
centuries via the triangular trade route, and were welcomed by whips, chains, shackles, and all the
horrors of slavery. Slavery was legitimized by our government and continued for a few hundred years,
taking a civil war and sixteen presidents before it was abolished. To this day, there is still much hatred
between blacks and whites despite emancipation, desegregation, and integration; some would argue
that the condition of African Americans in the United States is still one of a subservient nature.
Federal law defines a hate crime as whenever a victim is attacked on the basis of his or her race,

The kind of racial problems we had here were the kinds of things where you wouldn t get the
promotion or the right jobs, said Byrd s sister Mary Verrett. In all the time I grew up, there was never
any outright bigotry, and none of us were afraid to walk the street. In fact, you could say we were
pretty happy. Many people seemed to believe the crime did not reflect a deeper problem. On the other
hand, Gary Bledsoe, president of the state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of
Colored People, said that the eastern part of Texas surrounding Jasper has been considered a problem
area and a hotbed of Klan activity for years. Jasper lies 55 miles north of the town of Vidor, where a
Klan group in 1993 tried to prevent the integration of an all white housing development, threatening
the first black residents as teen agers dressed in sheets confronted black newcomers (Cropper A16).
Certainly, the racist environment that Byrd s perpetrators were forced to grow up in contributed
greatly to their bigoted ideology. Reporters say Byrd s perpetrators were three troubled men riding and
drinking on a Saturday night. John William King, 23, was the trio s unofficial leader, a foul mouthed
convicted burglar whose prison nickname was Possum. Shawn Allen Berry, also 23, was King s
former high school classmate and partner in crime. Lawrence Russell

Characteristics Of A Code Of Ethics
Characteristics of a code of ethics
INTRODUCTION
This paper focuses on the characteristics of a code of ethics.
However, to understand these characteristics we first must understand what ethics is all about as well
as the importance of ethics and a code of ethics.
Most organizations believe that their employees are ethical so they do not need to pay attention to
Ethics and or have codes of ethics.
This is however a false assumption because you do not know if your employees are ethical. This is
because principles are relative and vary from each person to the other.
Another common belief is that ethics cannot be managed and that managing business ethics in the
workplace has little to no practical relevance.
This is once again a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ethics is all about conduct and character rather than objects so it is different from aesthetics.
Qualitative characteristics of a code of ethics
As mentioned earlier, the qualitative characteristics of a code of ethics are comprehensiveness, clarity
and enforceability.
Clarity
Clarity refers to lack of ambiguity, doubt and or vagueness.
Ambiguity is the doubtfulness, inexactness or uncertainty of meaning or intention.
In order for a document to have clarity, when writing it you must ensure that it is understandable,
specific, honest and concise.
If a code of ethics is clear, then it is easy to keep within the conduct that is deemed proper and ethical
and any conduct that is contrary to the code becomes an obvious violation and is considered to be
unethical.
Comprehensiveness
This means that the code of ethics should cover virtually any conduct.
This is a necessary characteristic though it sounds unreasonably broad.
It is necessary because of the idea that one would conform to the spirit as opposed to the letter of the
law.
An employee of an organization cannot be punished for breaking rules which are not

Pateman s Argument In The Fraternal Social Contract
Pateman main argument in The Fraternal Social contract is that the social contract is formed by men
as a way to rule over the bodies of women. She argues that during discussions and arguments of the
social contract there is a silent about the part of the story which reveals the social contract is a
fraternal pact that constitutes civil society as a patriarchal or masculine order (Pateman 1989: 33). She
goes on to say to insist that patriarchy is nothing more than paternal rule is itself a patriarchal
interpretation (Pateman 1989: 35) and discussed at a length the transition from a traditional form of
patriarchy to a modern form of patriarchy. In her article, Pateman compares and contrast the views of
famous philosophers such as Filmer, Locke, and Rousseau to strengthen her point. ... Show more

Pateman argues that the fact that the social contract is not an agreement between individual fathers or
husbands, but a fraternal pact becomes particularly clear in Freud s version of the social contract story
(Pateman 1989: 41), a story in which brothers killed their father and formed a contract between
themselves to share the women that once belong to their father. She goes on to say that the contract
constitutes patriarchal civil society and the modern, astrictive rule of men over women (Pateman
1989: 43). Furthermore, she discusses how the fraternal social contract is a specifically modern
reformulation of this patriarchal tradition. She argues that the father is dead, but the brothers
appropriate the ability specific to women (Pateman 1989:

Foreign imports fell drastically from 1919 1921 and from 1925 to 1927.
Chinese industries continue to develop in the 1930s with the advent of the Nanking decade in the
1930s, when Chiang Kai shek unified most of the country and brought political stability. China s
industries developed and grew from 1927 to 1931. Though badly hit by the Great Depression from
1931 to 1935 and Japan s occupation of Manchuria in 1931, industrial output recovered by 1936. By
1936, industrial output had recovered and surpassed its previous peak in 1931 prior to the Great
Depression s effects on China. This is best shown by the trends in Chinese GDP. In 1932, China s
GDP peaked at 28.8 billion, before falling to 21.3 billion by 1934 and recovering to 23.7 billion by
1935. * The rural economy of the Republic of China
The rural economy retained much of the characteristics of the Late Qing. While markets had been
forming since the Song and Ming dynasties, Chinese agriculture by the Republic of China was almost
completely geared towards producing cash crops for foreign consumption, and was thus subject to the
say of the international markets. Key exports included glue, tea, silk, sugar cane, tobacco, cotton, corn
and peanuts.
The rural economy was hit hard by the Great Depression of the 1930s, in which an overproduction of
agricultural goods lead to massive falling prices for China as well as an increase in foreign imports (as

Lesson Plan For A Small Group Of Three First Grade,...
LESSON PLAN
CONTEXT
This lesson is designed for a small group of three first grade, classified English language learning
(ELL) students. The students are ages six through eight years old and are in a first grade classroom.
They spend 90% of their time in the regular classroom, and the other 10% outside of the classroom
receiving instruction from the ESOL teacher. All three of these students are female, two of which are
Latino and the other of Arabic descent. Only one of the Latino girls was born outside of the United
States, and the other two students were U.S. born. They attend Andrew Jackson Elementary School in
South Philadelphia. The two Latino students have gone to Jackson from the time they were in
Kindergarten, while the Arabic student entered Jackson this year after the school year had already
begun. All three of these children are below grade level in all content areas, especially literacy. In
terms of this lesson, math is the content area being addressed. The concepts of less than, greater than,
and equal to will be taught. Prior to this lesson, the students have learned how to count and label their
numbers 0 through 100. They have worked briefly with $#$#1$#$# lines and understand the
cardinality of numbers.
DESIRED RESULTS
In this lesson, I am trying to accomplish teaching the students the key concepts of less than, greater
than, and equal to. I want them to understand that each number holds its own value and that a specific

The Difference Between Performance Of Islamic Banks And...
the difference between performance of Islamic banks and conventional banks before and during
financial crisis. They did not find the difference between the profitability of two systems to be
statistically different, though Islamic banks performed better than their conventional counterpart.
Chazi and Syed (2010) have identified that Islamic banks have comparatively better risk management
than conventional banks. Ouerghi (2014) also studied the impact of financial crisis and also conducted
a post crisis study on both banking systems to find that performance varies with the size of banks
(Beck, Demirgüç Kunt, Merrouche, 2013). Ouerghi (2014) also found that profitability, credit risk and
efficiency of conventional banks was better than Islamic banks but large Islamic banks did better than
large conventional banks. Similarly, Mobarek Kalonov (2014) provided empirical evidence, using two
frontier approaches, from many OIC countries to compare Islamic and conventional banking. They
found that though conventional banks more efficient in their operations, Islamic banks had an upper
hand when it came to financial stability. Their extensive study covered pre crisis and crisis periods.
The finding of Mobarek Kalonov (2014) is validated by an earlier study conducted by Al Hares,
AbuGhazaleh, El Galfy (2013) in which they studied banks from 2003 2011. Al Hares, AbuGhazaleh,

connecting the Portuguese colonies, Angola, Mozambique to Portugal. In 1946, after acquiring the two

Compare And Contrast Softball And Baseball
Softball vs. Baseball
Baseball was, is and always will be to me the best game in the world (Ruth, n.d). While many people
agree with Babe Ruth on that opinion, softball is also quickly becoming an American favorite. Not
only has softball been added to the Olympic games, but college softball has also become popular.
According to Anderson and Lopez (2017), Women s College World Series coverage on ESPN was up
21% in live audience views in 2017. While similar in many aspects, the differences between softball
and baseball include rule changes, equipment size, and field size.
The Rules
While the most basic rules are the same in both softball and baseball, there are still a few differences
in how the two games are played. In softball, there are only seven innings, while in baseball there is
typically nine innings. However, in both sports, the games can be extended in case of a tie, where
extra innings will be played until one team scores more runs than the other team. Another difference in
gameplay between softball and baseball is stealing bases. Although both games allow stealing, in
softball the base runner must stay on the base until the pitched ball crosses home plate, while in
baseball, the base runner can lead off the base and can be thrown out at any time. The most significant

Summary and Analysis of The Merchant s Tale Essay example
Summary and Analysis of The Merchant s Tale (The Canterbury Tales)
Prologue to the Merchant s Tale:
The merchant claims that he knows nothing of long suffering wives. Rather, if his wife were to marry
the devil, she would overmatch even him. The Merchant claims that there is a great difference
between Griselde s exceptional obedience and his wife s more common cruelty. The Merchant has
been married two months and has loathed every minute of it. The Host asks the Merchant to tell a tale
of his horrid wife.
Analysis
The prologues that link the various Canterbury Tales shift effortlessly from ponderous drama to light
comedy. The lamentable tale of Griselde gives way to the Host s complaint about his shrewish wife.

To this the knight retorted with Biblical stories that state a man without a wife is bent on ruin. These
stories cites the creation of Eve for Adam as proof that a wife is man s support, as well as examples of
humble and devoted wives. January, wished to have a young wife of no older than thirty, for a young
wife would be more pliable, but Placebo warned him that it takes great courage for such an aged man
to take a young wife. He warned him of the misery that can come from taking a wife, for she could be
shrewish or a drunkard, facts that a husband will not learn until well into the marriage. Despite the
common opinion that Placebo has a wonderful wife, he knows what faults she has. They argue about
the merits of marriage, with Placebo predicting that January will not please his wife for more than
three years, but Placebo eventually assents to January s plan. January finally decided to take a young
and pretty wife, foolishly believing that nobody would find fault with his choice. He spoke to Placebo
and his friends about his choice, praising his intended wife. January, however, worries that a man who
finds perfect happiness on earth as he would with his wife would never find a similar happiness in
heaven, for one must choose between one perfect happiness and another. Justinus countered by stating
that it is more likely that married men will get to heaven than single men. He muses that marriage
might be January s purgatory.

structure, the DNA (base sequence provided) partially unwinds, so it can be read. RNA polymerase
enzymes attach onto the promoter reigon of the gene. The RNA polymerase assists in the
complementray base pairing of free ribonucleotides with exposed bases of the template strand of
DNA. Therefore, new hyrdogen bonds will be formed between the bases of DNA and the newly
formed RNA molecule. When the RNA polymerase reaches the terminal reigon of the gene, hydrogen
bonds break of and a newly formed mRNA strand C A U C U AA C C C C A G A G G A G is created.

With that being said, this mRNA sequence codes for six codons and six amino acids. After the creation
of mRNA, proteins need to be made in order to make hameglobin, through translation. The mRNA
strand exits the nucleus and attaches onto a ribosominal sub unit, within the cytoplasm. Every three
letters, which code for one amino acid is read, as the mRNA strand flows through the ribomsomes.
Once the mRNA is positioned properly in the ribosomal sub uint, it triggers the approach for tRNA.
Each tRNA (anti codon) brings one amino acid and complentary binds it with the mRNA codon. The
tRNA will then drop off its amio acids, which will be attached onto the growing polypeptide chain.
Once the polypeptide chain has gained all the needed amino acids for new protein, it will break of the
ribosome and make its way to the endoplasmic reticulum. Later on these amino acids will combine
and create a hemoglobin protein (McKinley, O Loughlin Bidle,

Gunn has lived on the island for three years, and knows where the treasure lies. Before the pirates find
Jim and his mother, Jim grabs a key and an oilskin packet from the old sea chest. Jim s father dies, and
he and his mother flee to the nearby town and ask them to help them but they refuse to. They find a
nearby bridge to hide under, and escape from the pirates. Finally, the people from the town decide to
come to Jim and his mothers rescue. Later in the book, Jim hides in an apple barrel and overhears
Silver and other crewmates about taking the ship once they have the treasure on the ship. When land

Designers and Manufacturers Should Rethink and Redesign...
This is a book by two researchers who are trying to find ways to build and make things that are
friendlier to the environment. Their approach is very different from the usual ecological approach,
which, as put by McDonough and Braungart, is to be less bad. The regular approach has normally
been to just reduce the amount of toxins in a product, or trying to collect and recycle goods, or adding
expensive and bulky fixes to already existing systems. But not in this book; the authors idea is that
designers and manufacturers should instead try to rethink and redesign the materials that they make
with their end uses in mind. By using nontoxic materials that can also easily break down into quality
materials, this creates byproducts that can be reused to manufacture quality items. The authors also
recommend the planning of buildings and industrial complexes to use the environment that surrounds
them for things like heating, cooling, and design. One of the strengths of the book is that the
suggestions here are not just hypothetical situations. In fact, the book itself is made of a certain kind of
polymer plastic and is also printed with nontoxic inks that can be easily washed off, which makes the
material made available to produce another book. The authors have also worked on much bigger
projects, such as the redesigning of the Ford facility in Michigan, based on these kinds of principles.
The book is not only positive but also specific on how to design and manufacture things for

The Tragedy Of Dante s Inferno
The rush that comes from reading a good book has filled this body with excitement! To watch the web
of another human being s thoughts come alive to the imagination, hundreds of years after its original
penning, should make anyone step back and breathe a sigh of amazement. But, pity has crept in along
with the awareness that a richer, more complete understanding of this full entanglement is out of reach
these many years later.
The book that left the resounding feelings of excitement and sorrow was Dante s Inferno. Written at a
time in his life filled with grief and displacement, with the feeling of betrayal looming over him, a
glimpse of understanding starts to illuminate the first strands of his web.
Dante draws from a vast amount of sources to compile his poem. The combined influence of the
Jewish concept of Sheol, the Christian idea of a lake of fire, and the Greek and Roman mythological
underworlds are most likely the sources to Dante s version of hell. These writing appealed to Dante s
mood and passion and allowed his anger to come alive.
His intents for writing such a novel on the other hand, are a little more interred, proving the need for
the use of a hypothetical shovel. His political appointment fused with involvement in the war between
the White and Black Guelfs, which ultimately caused his exile from Florence, gave time for Dante to
put his revenge on paper. Thus, he penned his philosophy and frustration for which all the world could
relate to one degree or

Henrik Ibsen Sacrifice
A selfless act of putting others, or others needs before one s self is a sacrifice. It is because that person
deems another individual necessities more important than their own. Mrs. Popov from the short
literature story The Bear, A Joke in One Act, written by Anton Chekhov in the nineteenth century,
demonstrates the true love, and faithfulness a woman holds for her disloyal and deceased husband.
Nora, a character in the writing of A Dollhouse (Et Dukkehjem), written by Henrik Ibsen in 1879,
validates the harsh choices a woman must choose to put her husband s ego in front of her own.
Furthermore, both of these women make evident that sacrifices can be problematic for not only their
selves, but for the others that are involved. By sacrificing something of great importance can lead to
even greater rewards. Chekhov illustrates Mrs. Popov s dedication to her husband by writing Yes, I

Demand For Medical Care Essay
Demand for Medical Care
The demand for medical care is derived from our demand for good health. Michael Grossman was the
first to do econometric research on this topic. Grossman s work established two approaches for
consideration. In the first, medical care is viewed as an input in the production function for health, and
in the second, as an output produced by medical care providers (Henderson, p.142). There are two
main factors that determine the demand for medical care. The first is the patient factor. This includes a
patient s health status, demographic characteristics and economic status. The second is the physician
factor. This is an interesting topic because it introduces the principal (patient) agent (physician)
problem. We are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a moral question that we need to answer is when do you stop? Thomas McKeown (1976)
noticed that there was a secular decline in mortality rates. The quality of life was one of the major
factors. There was an increase in income as well as education. The living standards and nutrition
chipped in as well. The public health authorities improved sanitation. Which in return all lead to a
decrease in diseases. An increase in technology also helped the cause. Diseases like cancer where
slowed due to Chemotherapy and stricter regulations directed to corporations on dumping waste.
(Henderson p.145) Genetics also play a major role in determining our health. Half of your genes come
from your father and the other half from your mother. There are two factors that play a critical role in
determining the health of an individual: the risk of exposure to a particular disease and the ability of
the individual to resist the disease (and recover from its consequences) once exposed (Henderson
p.144). If your father has high blood pressure then his siblings are susceptible to high blood pressure
too. Now we will look at the determinants in the demand for medical care. Henderson defines demand
as the sacrifice an individual is willing to make in order to obtain a given amount of a particular good
or service. In other words you can t always get what you want. Need rarely equals demand. Need is
almost always greater than demand.

Ethnicity As A Key Determinant Of Voting Behavior
Hypothesis
While ethnicity is not mono causal to determining voting behaviour, the focus of this study is the
consistency of ethnicity as a key determinant of voting behaviour in Ghana, particularly, in the Volta
and Ashanti Regions. This dissertation posits that ethnicity is a consistent key determinant of voting
behaviour in Ghana, and this is because ethnicity is enshrined within the political arrangements of the
country (Oelbaum, 2007, pp. 242 273). There are two main ethnic blocs which give rise under the
essence of absolute majority electoral system, to a two dominant party system (Ayelazuno, 2011, pp.
22 48). These ethnic blocs are the Voltarians from the Volta Region, and the Ashantis from the Ashanti
Region (Arthur, 2009, pp. 46 51).
In Ghana, there are nearly ninety ethnic groups, and language is the core ethnic marker (Arthur, 2009,
p. 50). The electoral system provides a strong incentive to the two dominant parties, the National
Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to engage in crude ethnic politics to
win, even when they have lost in the majority of the regions (Ayelazuno, 2011, p. 47). As this system
has reified ethnicity, political parties that transcend ethnicity are doomed in a country where the ethnic
groups are quite aware of their differences (Ayelazuno, 2011, pp. 22 36).
Research Aims
In order to arrive at a coherent conclusion, the principal aim is sub divided into three aims: Research
aim one (RA1) defines ethnicity, and

How Chameleons Are Cruel Little Predators
Chameleons are cruel little predators. They hunt bugs, birds, mice and even other chameleons using
only one weapon: their tongues. A recent study explains exactly how these weapons work so
effectively.
To find out, the researchers collected a saliva sample from the most common type of chameleon,
Chamaeleo calyptratus. Next, they rolled a bead on a tilted plate, which had been soaked in the saliva.
That let them measure how much the saliva slowed the bead s descent, therefore allowing them to
calculate the spit s stickiness.
Chameleons saliva, it turns out, is about 400 times more sticky than human saliva. This allows the
hungry reptile to catch prey up to a third of its body weight and keep hold of the prey even as its

Child Development Is The Emotional, Psychological And...
Introduction
Child development is the emotional, psychological and biological changes that occur in human being.
These changes begin once the child is born and progress through the adolescent stage. the changes are
usually predictable however they are usually unique to every child and the rate of progression as well
differs from one child to another. The changes in development may be influenced by prenatal life
events and to some extent by genetic factors (Lillard et al., 2013). It is important to note that child
development is categorized into different periods, since each development period has some individual
differences.
Case study: Tom
According to case study conducted about a child by the name Tom, it was noted that child
development has certain stages. Tom was growing emotionally, mentally and physically as a child of
his age. According to his mother, Tom was born on May eighth in 2010 by cesarean section after a
normal pregnancy failed. At birth he weighed nine pounds six ounces and he was twenty four inches
long in measurement. Upon interviewing her mother, it was noted that Tom was not breast fed instead
she chose to give him formula. Tom hit all important development stages according to his mother. As
Tom progressed from toddler to preschooler, he was active and could play with toys and other
children. According to neighbor A, Tom was brighter than other children; his mother suggested that
most of his growth was occurring as it should for a child of his age.

The Methodical Approach Of A Doctoral Program
As a graduate student choosing a research design on a research topic is very important to the
completion of a doctoral program. Often times as research students they struggle with the research
process in which they require additional help or assistance on a chosen topic. Many students depend
upon their instructors and the additional assistance of the school library and the dissertation center. In
choosing a subject to complete research one of the most important factors is the methodical approach
in which will be sought in the research process. (Vankatesh, Brown, Bala, 2013).
The methodical approach implied provides assistance in examining, whether the information
researched was initiated and properly researched. When the researched information has been proven
the outcome becomes more prominent and reliable in other research subjects. This is important
because it shows the value of the research as well as its reliability and predictability. When a
researcher applies the proper methodology and research design the comparison among fact and theory
can be verified and it will also provide the researcher ethic procedures needed for the research to be
achieved (Vankatesh, Brown, Bala, 2013).
The researched information will give the strength and weaknesses of an envisioned research design
and method that will be used on the discussion of the effects of marketing on social media websites.
Justification for the method and design will also be provided. The avid need for businesses to

Whose Fault Was The Truck Accident
Whose fault was the truck accident?
In most cases it is rare to find that one driver is fully at fault in a truck accident apart from the rear end
collisions. It is usually more likely that both parties played a role and are all at fault with one of them
being the biggest contributor than the other. One of the most important factors used in the
determination of fault is mostly the legal principle of negligence. Law courts and insurance companies
will determine the fault by applying the negligence principle or the driver s failure of exercising duty
of care. The driver who was more careless will most likely be at fault than the other.
The negligence principle is sometimes partly determined by eyewitness accounts and even citations

The Between Sandrine And Jimmy
The given circumstances of Sad and Glad by John Cariani begin with the bar within the local hang out
, which is affectionately named The Moose Paddy. The bar, or, at least, the part that is shown,
contains:
1. A Table with two chairs (One for Sandrine and one for Jimmy)
2. A bathroom door (stage right)
3. An exit/entrance that leads to the front of the bar
This is a very minimalist play in general, so similar to the low amount of furniture, there are also few
given props. Of course, some are added in order to imply atmosphere.
1. Several beer bottles
2. Waitress tray
3. Ashtray (Atmosphere)

This is where it gets a bit complicated. Depending on who you ask, the protagonist can be Sandrine or
Jimmy, and the same with the antagonist. However, if we are going off of the stage directions, it
appears that Jimmy is the protagonist due to his emotional responses being portrayed within the stage
directions. For example, on page seven of the play, Jimmy has a stage direction that says Huge Blow.
But he s tough (Cariani, 7). Except for tone choices, it isn t often that an antagonist has such a clear
description of how the character is feeling, so this is a clue to the concept of Jimmy being the
protagonist. Along with the latter, Jimmy also has to face the obstacles that Sandrine creates to block
him from achieving his goal. The point of attack is the first interaction between Sandrine and Jimmy.
This is initiated when Jimmy notices her coming out of the bathroom in the bar. He s surprised to see
her and wants to talk to her to see how she s doing.
Sandrine, being the antagonist, doesn t want anything to do with Jimmy. She creates the obstacle that
stops Jimmy from achieving his goal, the obstacle being her engagement to another man. However,
her overall goal is to cut her previous ties with Jimmy and return to the normality of her bachelorette

For instance, female chimpanzees on average weigh about 134 pounds, a male chimpanzee they weigh
about 104 pounds, average weight of a female spider monkey is 21 pounds. As a male spider monkey

because they are both the same color. You can tell the difference by the spider monkeys fur is thicker
than a chimpanzees fur. You also might notice that a chimpanzee does not have a tail, but a spider
monkey does. That is because chimpanzees are apes and spider monkeys are monkeys. They both

An Example Of An Academic Decorum
An academic decorum is work ethic and attitude towards school. We all have been making our
academic decorum since we stepped into our first class. An example of a good academic decorum is
not being disruptive in class, but also doing good in school working hard, and striving to get good
grades. Also academic decorum can be how efficiently work is done in class. An academic decorum
can also be used to have a good work ethic about anything in life. For example if I want to be a better
football player I m going to have to work hard to get there. I m going to have to work out with weights
and do conditioning. That s going to take a good work ethic, and I also can t get distracted, because
then I won t get anything done. I have always been a good student, all throughout grade school I kept
screwing around to a minimum. I ve always had a good work ethic; I strive to get my work done on
time, and to the best of my ability. I would view myself as a contributor to a good academic decorum.
Occasionally I ll pack up early in class, distract the class, but everyone has times like that. I remember
a time in 5th grade we were all in class, and the teacher was teaching. My friend said something so
funny, so I started laughing, and I couldn t stop laughing. The teacher told me to stop, but it was just
too funny to stop. That is one example of one of the times I was demonstrating a bad example of
academic decorum. A good example of me having aa academic decorum was in 6th grade at the last

Patch Adams Reflection
Patch Adams showcases how holism works and how it benefits the patients mentally and physically.
Holism is tying humanity to the physicality (Kretchmar, 2005) which is the central to Patch s views of
being a doctor and how he practices medicine throughout the film. The way that Patch heals the
patients by using laughter as a part of their treatment illustrates the definition of holism. Patch Adams
demonstrates a holistic approach to his practice by displaying holistic ideas which are that doctors
should connect with their patient on a personal level and the idea of treating the person and the
disease. To understand how Patch Adams exhibits holism, it s important to summarize the movie to
understand Patch s holistic approach. The movie is about Hunter Patch Adams journey in medical
school after he self committed himself to a mental hospital for his suicide attempts. While he was at
the mental hospital, the doctor didn t take the time to truly pay attention to him or give him actual
treatment which inspired him to become a doctor. At medical school, he immediately disagreed on
how the professors were teaching them in terms of just being technical and regarding themselves
about others. He starts visiting the university s hospital even though he isn t allowed because he was a
first year student and starts entertaining the patients. During his mission, the dean of the university
was against his holistic views and tries to expel him but Patch takes him to the court of

Example Of Positional Data
The positional data in the three dimensional space (latitude, longitude, and altitude) for EWR arrival
flights, including all minute by minute arrival flight tracks were selected from FAAAircraft Situation
Display to Industry (ASDI) data services. The ASDI information consists of components like flight
plans, position reports, flight diversions, and cancellations. The position reports were the updates of
aircraft positions every time when the computers were aware of a position amend (i.e. every 12
seconds for enroute RADAR or 5 seconds for TRACON).
EWR airport arrival capacity, i.e. Airport Arrival Rate (AAR), is a dynamic parameter to specify the
number of arrival aircraft that EWR airport can accept throughout a consecutive hour (or 15 ... Show

For each of the WAF files, the data include polygons of airspace regions where aircraft are likely to
deviate around with corresponding avoidance probability thresholds, such as 80%. This data is
available for each of the flight levels from 25,000 ft (FL250) up to 45,000 ft (FL450) in 1,000 ft
increments. The center and sector Weather impacted traffic indexes were calculated using CIWS and
flight data.
C. Weather Impacted Traffic Index (WITI) Model
WITI indicates how bad the weather was based on the number of aircraft affected by it. Over the past
decade, WITI, at an aggregated national and regional level, has been well accepted as an indication of
National Airspace System (NAS) air traffic delays due to it s strong correlation with the latter (for
example, see Ref. 8). In this study, the airspace hourly WITI (center or sector) is defined by using the
flight and weather in the 4 dimentional space inside the airspace S and time H, as: .
Here i, j, k, and t are the latitude, longitude, altitude at a specific time t (in minute), respectively. T is
the reference flight track segment at (i, j, k) and t on the reference day. W is assigned a value of 1 for
the severe weather at location (i, j, k) and t, and a value of 0 otherwise. The reference days were
identified as the days with no significant weather, but significant traffic demand and low NAS

Efforts of the European Union to Help Combat the Greek...
European Union (EU) plays a major part in facing this Greek financial debt crisis, which requires a
major restructuring in the economic sector and to tighten stronger integration among EU member
country. The primary focal point is on restoring the sustainability of public finances and addressing
other macroeconomic imbalances by fostering fiscal discipline. In addition, new rules are set to ensure
stronger and more effective economic governance, particularly in the euro zone area, with adequate
mechanisms to monitor progress and ensure enforcement.
Facing the crisis, Greece has received two bailout packages from the EU, European Commissions

Figurative Language In Alice In Wonderland
An author frequently exemplifies different messages and conflict within a story or novel. More often
or not, an author portrays certain types of literary devices to convey a message between the setting and
characters. In Lewis Carroll s novel, Alice in Wonderland, Alice s curiosity and innocence as a child in
the Victorian Era leads to her exploring another world called Wonderland. She is challenged to find
the true meaning of exploring outside of an ordinary world which leads her to question her own
identity. The depths of wonderland and many influences Alice stumbles across changes the dynamics
of her inner self from a child to an adult. The white rabbit resembles her escape outside of reality into
a new world that ultimately creates a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Carroll uses the food and drinks as a way of representing Alice s curious appetite for growing up in
her societal role. As she wanders around Wonderland, her curiosity often leads to her eating or
drinking an object in order to satisfy her curiosity. When she drinks the Drink Me substance she says,
Curiouser and curiouser! Cried Alice she was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot
how to speak good English (Carroll 6). Many times throughout the novel, Alice adventures revolve
around food and drinks such as sweet baked snacks, potions and tea to appease her curiosity. Alice
begins to lose control of her eating and drinking habits of Wonderland which demonstrates her
maturity as she looks towards adulthood in the reality world. The more food and drinks Alice applies
to herself, Carroll establishes the metaphor of growing up results in unpredictable events and changes
that are irreversible. Alice stumbles across the Cheshire Cat who portrays the opposite of growing up
as he believes taking short cuts are better than asking for advice. The Chesire cat exclaims to Alice,
Then it doesn t matter which way you go (Carroll 49). The metaphor from the Cheshire Cat resulted
from Alice asking about visiting the Mad Hatter. In this case, The Cheshire Cat is a representation of
taking the easy route and not visiting the mad hatter,

Beowulf and Grettir s Saga Essay
Beowulf and Grettir s Saga
IN THE DEAD OF THE NIGHT, someone or something, is murdering the local townsfolk. As fate
provides, a stranger marches into the local bar announcing his intention to kill the menacing outlaw.
The fiend returns to the scene of his crimes, and, as predicted, the outsider fights and mortally wounds
the brute, which limps off to a hidden lair. The hero and his comrade(s) track the wounded villain to
an underwater cave and the ensuing fray results in the death of the criminal s sidekick. The
stranger/hero explores the cave, discovering the carcass of the original fugitive, treasure and booty.
Meanwhile, the stranger s posse thinks the hero is dead and abandons him. The hero s surprising

There is historical evidence that the Anglo Saxon Beowulf was composed, or more exactly
transcribed, 900 years earlier than Grettir s Saga. According to Howell Chickering, Jr. there is only
one piece of verifiable historical data in Beowulf, Hygelac s death in 521 during a raid on the Frisians
(247). It is believed Grettir s Saga was originally written in Icelandic, sometime in the early 14th
century (Killings 1). Beowulf s scop describes the fluctuation of oral composition by saying he, found
new words, bound them up truly, / began to recite Beowulf s praise / a well made lay of glorious deed,
/ skillfully varied his matter and style (871a 874b). The time gap between the two works can be
narrowed to 400 years if one considers Beowulf s transcription point in the 10th century, and Grettir s
Saga in the 14th century. Chickering asserts Grettir s Saga and Beowulf, go back independently to a
common original (254), and are not evolutionary partners.
The plot outlined above illustrates the many close parallels of books 64 to 67 of Grettir s Saga and the
first book of Beowulf. However, the underlying religious tenor shifts significantly from work to work.
Grettir s Saga immediately identifies itself as a Christian tale through the introduction of a priest who,
after becoming the stranger s sidekick, banishes the hero. Grettir s monster only appears at Yuletide, a
time of Christian festivity formalized by

The Death Penalty Is A Form Of Execution
I. Introduction
The death penalty is a form of execution used in the United States. The federal death penalty can be
used in any state or territory of the U.S. even in states that do not have it. There are currently 32 states
including North Carolina that have the death penalty. Its purpose was to deter crime from happening.
Therefore, creating a safer environment. Unfortunately this has not been the case. The death penalty
has claimed innocent lives, ruined lives, is issued at random unfairly, and does not decrease the crime
rate. It should be abolished by all states because it does not work.
II. History Britain influenced America s use of the death penalty more than any other country. When
European settlers came to the new world (now the United States). They brought capital punishment.
The first recorded execution in the new colonies was that of Captain George Kendall in the Jamestown
colony of Virginia in 1608. He was killed for being a spy for Spain. Death penalty laws were different
from colony to colony. It was Cesare Beccaria s 1767 essay On Crimes and Punishment that had a
strong impact throughout the world on the justification for the state s taking of a life1. The first
attempt to reform the death penalty in the U.S. occurred when Thomas Jefferson introduced a bill to
revise Virginia s death penalty laws. The bill proposed that capital punishment be used only for crimes
of murder and treason. It was defeated by only one vote1. In 1946, Michigan was

Fifty Shades Of Grey Analysis
Dominant Men versus Submissive Women
In Beaumont s version of Beauty and the Beast and Fifty Shades of Grey written by E. L. James, the
male figure is portrayed as beast like and dangerous whereas on the contrary the female is vulnerable
and submissive to the male. Both Beauty and Anastasia are in patriarchal relationships and give into
the desires of the dominant male figure in their lives and this creates a lack of power for the female
gender. Throughout Beaumont s version of Beauty and the Beast the idea of a patriarchal relationship
was evident between Beauty and the Beast. The Beast used the tactic of manipulation and had
complete control over Beauty ultimately leading to her falling in love with him. Every night the Beast

Beaumont s version of Beauty and the Beast, Beast manipulated Beauty to fall in love with him by
constantly asking her to marry him. When he starved himself leading to his almost death she was in a
vulnerable state and eventually became submissive and gave into the Beasts wishes. On the contrary
in Fifty Shades of Grey Christian took advantage of the idea that Anastasia liked him and made her
sign a contract if she wanted to be with him. These two dominant men got what they wanted through
manipulation creating a sense of lacking power for the female gender. Women are supposed to be

  • 3. Physics Of The M N + 1 Ax N The M n+1 AX n , or MAX phases are ternary carbides or nitrides with a hexagonal crystal structure, wherein the M n+1 X n layers are interleaved with A layers. M is an early transition metal, A is an A group element, which is mostly 13 and 14 groups and X is carbon or nitrogen. MAX phases exhibit a unique combination of properties arising from their atomic bonding and structural characteristics which situates them on the boundary between metals and ceramic bridging the gap between them [1 6]. Due to the metallic nature of the M and A elements, MAX phases tend to be relatively soft and readily machinable (due to weak M A bonds), with good thermal shock resistance as well as damage tolerance, and in addition are excellent thermal and electrical conductors. Conversely, being carbides and nitrides they exhibit typical ceramic properties and are good refractory materials, are very stable thermodynamically at high temperatures, have good chemical resistance and have relatively low thermal expansion coefficients. These properties make MAX phases amenable for use in the automotive and aerospace industry[2, 3, 5]. The n in the M n+1 AX n phases, denotes the number of M layers sandwiched between the A layers. Researchers have reported M 2 AX, M 3 AX 2 , and M 4 AX 3 phases, which refer to the 211, 312, and 413 phases, respectively. Through simple language, we are able to relate to both Christian/Issa and Safia/Sofia. Despite their circumstances, the themes of ambition and dreams are rather prominent. However, the dreams/ambitions are only fulfilled through several acts of self sacrifice. Through the use of a split narrative, Lakhous employs foreshadowing in order to create suspense of the impending romance. When the readers first meet Issa and Sofia, their thoughts are continuously filled with hope and optimism regarding their dreams and ambitions. For Issa, he seems rather ambitious to begin his mission. He focuses mainly on blending into his surroundings, but admits that sometimes I forget the part I am playing (47). The state of boards in the schools have been in a mission to improve the education systems in schools which in return will improve the academic performance of the students. To achieve this, they have to find the reasons as to why the students do not perform well or the things that hinder the performance of the students in schools. Some of this action may involve central themes including creativity, collaboration, and patience. Fixing the issue of poor nutrition among students will also help in tacking the health constituents that majority of the students suffer from such as obesity, undernourishment, and even eating disorders which have raised concern in the United States of America. The issue of providing students from low income families with nutritious meals has been debated for many years. As from the period of the Great Depression some schools started to offer their students with lunch and this had two major goals. The first goal of the school lunch program was to ensure that students from low income families did not have poor nutrition by giving them meals with nutritional benefits. However, to understand these characteristics we first must understand what ethics is all about as well as the importance of ethics and a code of ethics. Most organizations believe that their employees are ethical so they do not need to pay attention to Ethics and or have codes of ethics. This is however a false assumption because you do not know if your employees are ethical. This is because principles are relative and vary from each person to the other. Qualitative characteristics of a code of ethics As mentioned earlier, the qualitative characteristics of a code of ethics are comprehensiveness, clarity and enforceability. Clarity Clarity refers to lack of ambiguity, doubt and or vagueness. Ambiguity is the doubtfulness, inexactness or uncertainty of meaning or intention. In order for a document to have clarity, when writing it you must ensure that it is understandable, specific, honest and concise. If a code of ethics is clear, then it is easy to keep within the conduct that is deemed proper and ethical and any conduct that is contrary to the code becomes an obvious violation and is considered to be unethical. Comprehensiveness This means that the code of ethics should cover virtually any conduct. This is a necessary characteristic though it sounds unreasonably broad. It is necessary because of the idea that one would conform to the spirit as opposed to the letter of the law. An employee of an organization cannot be punished for breaking rules which are not ... Consequently, two major events are involved; transcription, which makes messenger RNA (mRNA) that holds the codons that tRNA will translate into amino acids and eventually a polypeptide; and transcription, which makes polypetide chains that make proteins. In relation the hameglobin structure, the DNA (base sequence provided) partially unwinds, so it can be read. RNA polymerase enzymes attach onto the promoter reigon of the gene. The RNA polymerase assists in the complementray base pairing of free ribonucleotides with exposed bases of the template strand of DNA. Therefore, new hyrdogen bonds will be formed between the bases of DNA and the newly formed RNA molecule. Their approach is very different from the usual ecological approach, which, as put by McDonough and Braungart, is to be less bad. The regular approach has normally been to just reduce the amount of toxins in a product, or trying to collect and recycle goods, or adding expensive and bulky fixes to already existing systems. But not in this book; the authors idea is that designers and manufacturers should instead try to rethink and redesign the materials that they make with their end uses in mind. By using nontoxic materials that can also easily break down into quality materials, this creates byproducts that can be reused to manufacture quality items. The authors also recommend the planning of buildings and industrial complexes to use the environment that surrounds them for things like heating, cooling, and design. The book that left the resounding feelings of excitement and sorrow was Dante s Inferno. Dante draws from a vast amount of sources to compile his poem. The combined influence of the Jewish concept of Sheol, the Christian idea of a lake of fire, and the Greek and Roman mythological underworlds are most likely the sources to Dante s version of hell. • 29. Demand For Medical Care Essay Demand for Medical Care The demand for medical care is derived from our demand for good health. Michael Grossman was the first to do econometric research on this topic. Grossman s work established two approaches for consideration. In the first, medical care is viewed as an input in the production function for health, and in the second, as an output produced by medical care providers (Henderson, p.142). There are two main factors that determine the demand for medical care. The first is the patient factor. This includes a patient s health status, demographic characteristics and economic status. The second is the physician factor. This is an interesting topic because it introduces the principal (patient) agent (physician) problem. We are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a moral question that we need to answer is when do you stop? Thomas McKeown (1976) noticed that there was a secular decline in mortality rates. The quality of life was one of the major factors. There was an increase in income as well as education. The living standards and nutrition chipped in as well. The public health authorities improved sanitation. Which in return all lead to a decrease in diseases. An increase in technology also helped the cause. Diseases like cancer where slowed due to Chemotherapy and stricter regulations directed to corporations on dumping waste. (Henderson p.145) Genetics also play a major role in determining our health. Half of your genes come from your father and the other half from your mother. There are two factors that play a critical role in determining the health of an individual: the risk of exposure to a particular disease and the ability of the individual to resist the disease (and recover from its consequences) once exposed (Henderson p.144). If your father has high blood pressure then his siblings are susceptible to high blood pressure too. Now we will look at the determinants in the demand for medical care. Henderson defines demand as the sacrifice an individual is willing to make in order to obtain a given amount of a particular good or service. In other words you can t always get what you want. Steven King was famously an alcoholic for much of his life, and the careers of many a tortured writer have ended in suicide. • 32. Ethnicity As A Key Determinant Of Voting Behavior Hypothesis While ethnicity is not mono causal to determining voting behaviour, the focus of this study is the consistency of ethnicity as a key determinant of voting behaviour in Ghana, particularly, in the Volta and Ashanti Regions. This dissertation posits that ethnicity is a consistent key determinant of voting behaviour in Ghana, and this is because ethnicity is enshrined within the political arrangements of the country (Oelbaum, 2007, pp. 242 273). There are two main ethnic blocs which give rise under the essence of absolute majority electoral system, to a two dominant party system (Ayelazuno, 2011, pp. 22 48). These ethnic blocs are the Voltarians from the Volta Region, and the Ashantis from the Ashanti Region (Arthur, 2009, pp. 46 51). In Ghana, there are nearly ninety ethnic groups, and language is the core ethnic marker (Arthur, 2009, p. 50). The electoral system provides a strong incentive to the two dominant parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to engage in crude ethnic politics to win, even when they have lost in the majority of the regions (Ayelazuno, 2011, p. 47). As this system has reified ethnicity, political parties that transcend ethnicity are doomed in a country where the ethnic groups are quite aware of their differences (Ayelazuno, 2011, pp. 22 36). Next, they rolled a bead on a tilted plate, which had been soaked in the saliva. Often times as research students they struggle with the research process in which they require additional help or assistance on a chosen topic. However, if we are going off of the stage directions, it appears that Jimmy is the protagonist due to his emotional responses being portrayed within the stage directions. For example, on page seven of the play, Jimmy has a stage direction that says Huge Blow. But he s tough (Cariani, 7). Except for tone choices, it isn t often that an antagonist has such a clear description of how the character is feeling, so this is a clue to the concept of Jimmy being the protagonist. There is historical evidence that the Anglo Saxon Beowulf was composed, or more exactly transcribed, 900 years earlier than Grettir s Saga. According to Howell Chickering, Jr. there is only one piece of verifiable historical data in Beowulf, Hygelac s death in 521 during a raid on the Frisians (247). It is believed Grettir s Saga was originally written in Icelandic, sometime in the early 14th century (Killings 1). Beowulf s scop describes the fluctuation of oral composition by saying he, found new words, bound them up truly, / began to recite Beowulf s praise / a well made lay of glorious deed, / skillfully varied his matter and style (871a 874b). The time gap between the two works can be narrowed to 400 years if one considers Beowulf s transcription point in the 10th century, and Grettir s Saga in the 14th century. Chickering asserts Grettir s Saga and Beowulf, go back independently to a common original (254), and are not evolutionary partners. The plot outlined above illustrates the many close parallels of books 64 to 67 of Grettir s Saga and the first book of Beowulf.
