The tone that is contained in the extract to great extent is a candid tone. The use of inverted
sentence brands the candid tone to the stanzas in which they are found. For instance, to rest had
gone communicates the original meaning as when the inverted sentence may not be in use.
However, the inversion makes the stanza sound more poetic or lyrical. Another tone present in the
inverted sentences is conversational tone (Lombardi). However, the conversational tone is made to
sound more formal and as mentioned earlier, poetic, from the use of sentence inversion. Other tones
can be derived from the message conveyed at each point in the extract. For instance, horrified tone
is found in instances when the Hrothgar and his people reflect on the attacks from the Grendel. The
approach Hrothgar employs to mitigate Grendel s attacks is not at all aggressive which expresses a
pessimistic tone, and further excites pity from the reader, which conveys a pitiful tone ( Literary

The attention in the poem is focused on the attacks of the Grendel and the consequent reaction of

Distance in Modernist Aesthetics In his essay On the Origins of Aesthetic Disinterestedness
Jerome Stolnitz describes how aesthetic criticism began with Lord Shaftesbury s idea of the
virtuous man as a spectator, devoted to the very survey and contemplation of beauty in manners
and morals, the initial practical significance of disinterested is supplanted altogether by the
perceptual , a definition that would eventually grow from an ethical one to an aesthetic one (133).
While much of the tradition of aesthetic theory is built on this idea of the necessity of being
disinterested in the object in question, however, the implied inability to judge the aesthetic of
objects a viewer is interested in is extremely limiting. Immanuel Kant, an inheritor of this idea,
goes further and completely rules out any judgement from an interested viewer: everyone must
admit that a judgment about beauty, in which the least interest mingles, is very partial and is not
a pure judgment of taste (2). Both men, being of the 18th century, could never have anticipated a
Modernist aesthetic which relies heavily on the beauty of utility and inherently requires an
interested spectator. The aesthetic principles of Modernism are in many ways even entirely
incompatible with the kind of aesthetic disinterestedness Kant espoused. We must first decipher
exactly what Kant meant by an interested viewer. Kant distinguishes between adherent and free
beauty; with free beauty there is presupposed no concept of any purpose which the manifold of
the given object is to serve while human beauty (i.e. of a man, a woman, or a child), the beauty
of a horse, or a building (be it church, palace, arsenal, or summer house), presupposes a general
concept of the purpose which determines what the thing is to be... It is therefore adherent beauty
(15). To Kant the judgement of free beauty is pure because the viewer doesn t project their own

As you look on the television and are constantly bombarded by issues of racial calamity in this
day and age, do you notice a specific unrepresented group? For me and several of my fellow
peers, this answer is clearly a yes. The topic that I m choosing to talk about in relation to this class
is the Asian Advantage or the less well known name, Model minority. From the very beginning of
life, Asian Americans are characterized and limited to a specific subset of life. Often times, this
subset is often seen as positive, therefore negating any consequence or fault that this myth may

The model minority myth was created in 1966 by sociologist William Petersen in an article,

this article, it talks about the reasons why Japanese Americans have been successful in the United
States even after being condemned into internment camps. The timing of this article, however, was
very convenient in timing because it was released only a year after the Moynihan report, which
stated that the reasons that African Americans were faltering in their own socio economic status
was because they weren t doing what the model minority, Japanese Americans, were doing (Wang
2016).
