So.. how can we
help?
H
Can we even
help?
At an individual level, yes you do
make a difference but it seems
miniscule when you know it’s being
offset by large corporations on the
daily
So do it for your own health instead!
Climate impact is a just a bonus
Let’s look at the statistics
These suggestions both benefit the climate and to a much more
larger extent our own health -
Climate benefit - looked at as median reduction of kilotonnes of CO2eq per
100000 population per capita
Health benefit - looked at as median reduction of years lost, per 100000
population per year
CO2eq*/ CO2 equivalent is the mass of CO2 emissions that would cause the same
temperature change over 10 years as an emitted mass of GHG or mixture of GHGs
Clean
cookstoves
Clean cookstoves are not the same as standard gas-
powered stoves typically used in modern homes.
They are designed specifically for low-income
households in developing countries that rely on
traditional cooking methods, such as burning wood,
coal, or biomass.
How we can help save the environment slowly
Sustainable
diet
Eating foods that have a lower
environmental impact such as plant based
foods, reducing food waste, eating local or
seasonal produces
How we can help save the environment slowly
Clean/ Public
transport
This can include electric buses, trams, and trains that
run on renewable energy sources, as well as initiatives
promoting cycling and walking.
⬆️enhance air quality
⬇️reduce traffic congestion
How we can help save the environment slowly
So,
Do it for your HEALTH
Do it for the
ENVIRONMENT
(or do it for the turtles)
So What WE Can Do?
Discuss strategies to equitably enable sustainable lifestyles at
individual and structural levels
H
DO
NOTHING!!
Let me explain…
H
In 2022, while not touring Taylor Swift’s private jet amassed 170 flights
within the first 7 months of the year alone!
Her total emissions over 7 months were:
8,293.54 tonnes of CO2
Don't be Swift to Pollute: Let's Clean Up
Our Act!
H
The average person in Malaysia (2019) was estimated to be responsible
for:
10.158 tonnes of CO2
Let’s do the math:
Taylor Swift’s 7 month catalog of private jet trips was responsible for
as much emissions as 816 people in Malaysia OVER A
YEAR.
Let me Taylor it to you!
H
COP (Conference of the Parties): UN’s annual global climate summit.
Main Objective: Advance international efforts to combat climate change.
Participants: Representatives from nearly every country.
Key Focus Areas: Assess progress, update climate goals, implement the Paris
Agreement.
Influences: Global policies on emissions reduction, climate adaptation, and
support for developing nations.
Topics Discussed: Net-zero targets, climate finance, renewable energy
transitions.
The United Nations to the Rescue!
H
COP27 (2022) - Egypt:
● 416 private planes landed in / departed from Cairo International / Sharm-
El-Sheikh Airport(s) throughout the 2 week event.
Don’t be a COP-out!
H
● While people get told to work from home.
● These delegates are going on vacation every year!
Why Can’t They Work From Home?!
Source: Cornell Chronicle
Oh the hypocrisy!
H
THE TAKEAWAY
Before we rush to pedal through traffic, squeeze onto
overcrowded buses, freeze in our homes with
sweaters pulled tight, or make any other “noble”
sacrifice that we’re guilt-tripped into accepting, let’s
WAKE UP. The joke is on us. We must UNITE,
call out the hypocrisy, and take the lead as the ones
who actually care about the future of this planet—
while others virtue-signal their way to another first-
class flight. Because clearly, we’re the problem, right?

Editor's Notes

  • #27: 315 jets had documented flight information. This comparison is based on the most common flight route (17%) which was domestic within Egypt. This is not an isolated case, the COP28 was in Dubai and saw an even larger carbon footprint according to the study by UCL. The annual Davos meeting in Switzerland is the same…. Thousands of delegates fly in their fancy jets and gloat over their transport within the resort using electric buses. You know what’s funny? That are charged by Diesel generators overnight as they park. In 2022 , 1040 private jets flew in and out of the Swiss mountain resort over the course of 2 weeks.
  • #29: Only then we can have meaningful conversations regarding the future of our planet and the wasteful state of rapid turnover humanity is living. Only then we can take measures in our city planning, micro and macro policies that truly have the planet’s benefit in mind.
