How your business can utilize the
       Career Link Program
          asebek@iusd.org
           (949) 936-8640
What is Career Link?
• Career Link is a program through Irvine Unified School
District that helps students transition into the work force.
• Since 1981 we have created successful training
opportunities for youth and young adults, many with
  disabilities, ages 16-26.
• We work with over 200 business partners in the
community, and have developed relationships to enable
our youth to participate in career preparation activities.
• Our program is almost entirely grant funded, including
grants from the California Department of Education , the
California Department of Rehabilitation, and Workforce
  Investment program.
Benefits to our Business Partners Include:
       • Tax Credits and Hiring Incentives
• Savings in Employee Recruitment & Turnovers
    • Screened and Trained Applicant Pool
             • Employment Support
What About Insurance?
• Irvine Unified School District is self-insured
  for worker’s compensation. Students
enrolled in the Career Link Program, when
placed in a non-district work environment,
are considered employees of the Irvine
Unified School District and are covered for
any injury sustained while participating at
  the work site.
Please consider partnering
      with us to provide:
A. Internships
   • Our ultimate goal is paid employment, but to achieve this we have
found that internships are a vital means for our participants to gain
valuable work training experience. Most internships are unpaid, but in
some instances we are able to offer paid internships.

B. Consideration for Direct Hires
       • Will you consider interviewing our pre-screened applicants? We
are preparing our youth and young adults for entry level positions,
and would like to recommend those applicants that we feel are
ready for the open positions your company is seeking to fill.

C. Business Advisory Committee participation
       • Our local businesses have a lot to offer through training and
employment opportunities for our youth. We hope you will consider
attending our meetings twice a year.
Business Advisory
                  Council
• We are looking for businesses to join our Business Advisory Council,
(BAC). The mission of the BAC is to assist and support the objectives of
our federal grants by representing the perspective of business and
employers. Information and assessment of employment trends and needs
provided at these meetings are important components which help us
  enhance employment opportunities for youth.

• We meet twice a year at a business that is located in the immediate area so
that it is convenient for our business partners to attend. The meetings are
kept to a one hour time frame, usually meeting from 9-10:00AM, in the fall
  and spring each year.

• Our meetings are a great way for our office to publicly thank our business
partners with a certificate of partnership and participation, and it’s also a
nice opportunity for our business partners to network with other
businesses in the community. We usually rotate our meeting locations so
that our partners get a chance to host a meeting and showcase their
  business.

Editor's Notes

  • #2: Hi, my name is Ann Sebek, and I work for the Career Link Program at Irvine Unified School District as a I Job Developer. Today I would like to share a little about the methods that I use to work with employers in our community and to give you some strategies that may be helpful for Job Developers. I don’t have all the answers, but I am happy to share what is working for us.
  • #8: This is a small Example of some of the successful corporate business partners we have developed. If you share these locations with others in your office, or other neighboring school districts, we then are all working together to place our participants into jobs in our communities.
