Film 4 co-finances various productions, meaning they can fund up to half of the main
total of a production.
As part of the BBC TV license they are required to co-fund or fund seven films a year.
The BFI are a funding organisation that co-funds films.
To get the other half of the funding for their production will have to go to private or
corporate investors.
Due to Celador owning the TV show ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’ and Film 4
having rights to the book that was the base of Slum dog Millionaire, they decided to
help each other by splitting the funding of the production.
To be able to fund The Descent, Celador sold rights to Pathe films and then used that
money and added it to the funding of the Descent. However they kept the cinema UK
rights.
All the crew on the production of the decent were all freelance, meaning that it was
cheaper for celador allowing them to keep some fund for future productions.
