A hydrofoil is a wing-like structure attached to a boat's hull that lifts the hull out of the water as speed increases, reducing drag and boosting speed. The first hydrofoil boat was built in 1906 and achieved speeds over 42 mph, with a 1919 adaptation setting a record of 69 mph that stood for over 40 years. Many navies have developed hydrofoils for military use, and research led to jetfoils used on patrol boats and predecessors to jetskis, though human-powered models have been impractical except as novelties.

- 3. Hydrofoils Strictly speaking, a hydrofoil is a structure that looks like a wing that is attached to the hull of a boat and is submerged while the boat is at rest. As the boat increases speed, the hydrofoil develops sufficient lift to raise the entire hull out of the water, significantly decreasing hull drag and further increasing the boat’s speed. Both the wing-like structures and the boats that employ them are called hydrofoils.
- 4. Hydrofoils The first hydrofoil boat was designed and built in 1906 by Italian inventor Enrico Forlanini. It used a series of foils in a ladder-like configuration to lift the hull from the water. Forlanini’s boat achieved speeds in excess of 42 mph. In 1919, an adaptation of Forlanini’s boat, designed by Alexander Graham Bell and built by Casey Baldwin, set a record of 60 knots, or about 69 mph, a record that stood for more than 40 years.

Hydrofoils Many of the world’s navies have developed hydrofoils for military use, and research by the U.S. Navy and Boeing led to the jetfoil employed by the patrol hydrofoil missile ship, the predecessor to the immensely popular jetski. While most hydrofoils are designed to work with a motor to develop the necessary speed, developers have experimented with human-powered hydrofoils, the first successful models of which appeared in Germany in the 1950s. These craft, most of which look like water-based bicycles, are currently impractical as anything but a novelty. Nevertheless, designers are still hard at work trying to build one that will catch on with the general public.
