This document summarizes a workshop in Torino, Italy where participants explored the needs and practices of local inhabitants. They found that many emerging technologies touted as the future, like touchscreens, are already widely used. However, these technologies are often poorly integrated with people's real needs and practices. The workshop discussed tradeoffs around designing for all people versus specific groups, and addressing general needs versus individual desires. Participants concluded that designers should better understand how technology can support, rather than disrupt, people's existing practices and needs.
