- 4. children. and here is the second one and he is with : For my portion of this group speech, I will be speaking on the subject of same-sex marriage. For many generations across history, the topic of same sex marriage has remained a taboo subject that many people are scared to speak on. Although the topic has become more accepted and has become a subject that many people feel more comfortable talking about, there are still communities that see the topic as uncomfortable and inappropriate. This may be true to a person’s individual situation or culture. However, we are here to break those walls and to inform you on where we lye on the spectrum. I personally am a huge advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. Now after stating that, I hope that it has become obvious that I am for the topic of same-sex marriage. Many people can decide to be for or against this topic for many different reasons but in this speech, I will talk about two specific reasons as to why I am pro same sex marriage. My first reason is that denying people the right and freedom to marry is a perfect of institutionalized discrimination. For the people in this room who are not aware of what institutionalized discrimination is, it is when the government or institutions of power discriminate against a certain group of people as a whole. Telling a specific group of people, I.E. people that identify with the LGBTQ+ community, that they can not be married and looked at as a couple that, according to the law, is not legally recognized, is discrimination. The fact that people openly take their personal prejudice ideas and put them into play in making decisions with governmental policies, affecting an entire community and population as big as ten percent of Americas

According to the LA Times magazine, nearly one hundred thousand couples decided to marry after same sex marriage became legalized across the United States after just three months. After reading about these numbers, one can safely say that same sex marriage is important in playing a part of fulfilling many many countless dreams and hopes of our fellow American citizens. In a country th1at has for so long awaited equality and fairness, the legalization of same sex marriage serves as a step closer to national inclusivity and forwardness. The second reason that I think that same sex marriage should be legalized is because the illegalization of same sex marriage would create a second class citizenship. According to the Huffington Post, Joe Biden, the Vice President openly spoke about how he was tired about how the LGBTQ+ community was seen and treated like a second class society. Biden made the statement that he felt the “LGBT people face violence, harassment, unequal treatment, mistreatment by cops, denial of health care, isolation — always in the name of culture. I’ve had it up to here with culture. I really mean it,” he said, striking the table with his palms. “Culture never justifies rank, raw, discrimination or violation of human rights. There is no cultural justification. None. None. None.” Many powerful politicians and zealous citizens all agree that the LGBTQ+ community does face adversity in places that many cultures have the pleasure of not facing. Growing up in a society that thinks that your different is hard and can take a huge toll on the individuals who have grown to believe that they were lesser. Illegalizing same sex marriage will begin to set us, as a country, back in the direction of discrimination and will dismantle the very fabric of what this nation was founded upon, freedom. Dismantling freedom through discrimination and through second class citizenship, are just a few of the ways that our nation can be affected if it doesn’t offer the freedom to marry. Overall, people may hold specific political points of views, but in the end, it is important to take the attitude of the

Supreme Court Case: about the case Obergefell v. Hodges Groups of same-sex couples sued their relevant state agencies in Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, and Tennessee to challenge the constitutionality of those states' bans on same-sex marriage or refusal to recognize legal same-sex marriages that occurred in jurisdictions that provided for such marriages. The plaintiffs in each case argued that the states' statutes violated the Equal Protection Clause and Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, and one group of plaintiffs also brought claims under the Civil Rights Act. In all the cases, the trial court found in favor of the plaintiffs. Judicial precedent has held that the right to marry is a fundamental liberty because it is inherent to the concept of individual autonomy, it protects the most intimate association between two people, it safeguards children and families by according legal recognition to building a home and raising children, and it has historically been recognized as the keystone of social order. The Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment also guarantees the right of same-sex couples to marry as the denial of that right would deny same-sex couples equal protection under the law. Marriage rights have traditionally been addressed through both parts of the Fourteenth Amendment, and the same interrelated principles of liberty and equality apply with equal force to these cases; therefore, the Constitution protects the fundamental right of same-sex couples to marry. The Court also held that the First Amendment protects the rights of religious organizations to adhere to their principles, but it does not allow states to deny same-sex couples the right to marry on the same terms as those for opposite-sex couples.
