Exercise
The government of Country Y in Sub-Saharan Africa has been issued a grant by a
multi-lateral to promote new and innovative ICTD projects in the country. It is now
holding an innovation competition for an Impact Sourcing project/app targeted at urban
youth. Its RFP evaluation criteria include:
-Integration with ICTD policy
-Openness (of development, process, content, etc)
-Ensuring appropriate technology Promoting new innovation models
Utilizing the BOP model to achieve profits while serving a social goal

What project activities would you build into your project to address each of
these criterion?
Impact Sourcing (IS) is a sub-sector of Business Process Outsourcing and Offshoring through
which companies relocate business activities that they used to perform in-house to third partyproviders, often in a foreign (offshore) location. Unlike commercial, non-socially driven BPO
models, IS targets unemployed or underemployed technology-savvy urban youth, often
women, with the goal to temporarily improve their livelihoods through short-term work but also
facilitate the long-term transition to other, more challenging and lucrative employment by building
transferrable skill sets..
