ICS3211 - Intelligent
Interfaces II
Combining design with technology for effective human-
computer interaction
Week 9 Department of AI,
University of Malta
Design for Immersive
Realities
Week 9 overview:
• Guest Talk - Identities & Representation in Immersive Reality
• VR Design - a case study on emergency response in
cardiac arrest
• Design Discussions (Feedback & Insights)
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this session you should be able to:
• Have a better understanding of Identities and Representation in
Immersive Reality
• Develop practical skills in VR Design using MetaQuest 2
• Analyse a Case Study: Emergency Response in Cardiac Arrest
• Provide feedback and give insights into interface design
considerations for VR
VR Interfaces
• Design Elements for
• Immersion
• Presence
• Engagement
• Interaction
• AI (agents, environment)
Immersive Realities
• Identities – How are identities shaped? How do
humans interact with each other, with agents and
with the immersive environment?
• Representation – How do humans choose to
represent themselves in the immersive reality? How
does the interface help to create this representation
of the self? What design considerations should be
used?
Case Study in VR
• 10 VR Headsets (please
share)
• The game is developed
by the company Axon
Park in collaboration with
the University of
Michigan.
• A learning course in
Cardiac Arrest
Discussion
• Your insights are useful.
• Consider the following issues in the design process:
• What makes a good interface for a learning game inside a
VR?
• What elements of a VR-interface should be exploited for the
design of learning game?
• Consider the Emergency Preparedness game. What are its
strengths? What are its weaknesses?
• What AI techniques can be applied to improve its interface?
Pre-VR Experience
Questions
Understanding Expectations:
• What are your expectations from using a VR headset for learning about emergency response in cardiac arrest?
• How do you think VR differs from traditional training methods in terms of engagement and learning outcomes?
Theoretical Concepts:
• What are the key components of an intelligent interface, and how do they contribute to an effective learning
experience?
• How do you anticipate VR technology will enhance your understanding of emergency procedures for cardiac
arrest?
User Experience Considerations:
• What are the important factors to consider in designing a VR application for emergency medical training?
• How can VR interfaces be designed to accommodate users with different levels of experience and learning
styles?
Ethical and Practical Implications:
• What are the ethical considerations when using VR for medical training?
• Discuss potential limitations or challenges you might expect when using VR for learning about cardiac arrest
response.
Pre-VR Experience
Questions
Reflecting on the Experience:
• How did your experience with the VR headset meet or differ from your initial expectations?
• What aspects of the VR simulation made the learning experience more effective or challenging?
Learning Outcomes:
• How has the VR experience impacted your understanding of emergency response procedures for cardiac arrest?
• What were the key takeaways regarding the use of intelligent interfaces in medical training?
User Interface and Design Feedback:
• What elements of the VR interface did you find most intuitive or helpful?
• Were there any aspects of the VR design that you found confusing or that could be improved for better learning?
Comparative Analysis:
• How does the VR training compare to other methods of learning you have experienced for emergency preparedness?
• In what ways do you think VR technology could be further utilized or improved in emergency medical training
scenarios?
Future Applications:
• How do you see intelligent interfaces like VR evolving in the field of medical training and emergency response?
• What other applications of VR in healthcare or emergency scenarios can you envision?
