Stability starts and ends with good supply of clean power
ICT in Concern

• Global standards are essential and the less we host in-field without impeding
    the fieldworker the better.

• Email our key tool – recently completed migration to Office 365
• VoIP telephony and cost effective communication essential - Skype used
    globally.
• Web is also a core tool for the generation of income.
• ICT for Development is exciting new paradigm and one
that’s key to the ICT strategy over the coming years.

Mobile Money: M-Pesa has revolutionised the Kenyan marketplace
70% of all financial transactions are carried out on the M-Pesa platform
Digital Data Collection will transform how we monitor and evaluate our work…
With a grant of $50m from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in 2009, Concern
Worldwide launched Innovations for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, a multi-
year effort to support the development and field testing of inventive ways to save lives
and improve the health of mothers and young children.
In Malawi and partnering with VillageReach we;
• Established a 24-hour, toll-free hotline for women seeking information
and advice from a trained operator.
• Manage an SMS-based automated tips and reminder service for pregnant
women and caregivers of children under five.
• Designed and put into place a SMS-based health center booking system
to reduce wait times and streamline service.
• Undertook community outreach, education, and mobilization on
maternal, newborn and child health issues

Our Innovations unit is piloting similar initiatives
in India and Sierra Leone

Editor's Notes

  • #6: Standards Governance SupportData ProtectionDonor ManagementBeneficiary Management
  • #8: And the thing is the technology is not at all ground breaking – in fact for the end user it’s very simple and cheap. A $10 mobile is all that’s needed. One thing to note – it’s not just for sending money to family members – it’s used to access salaries, payments, deposits and withdrawals. It’s has been widely adopted across the nation – from CEOs to Masaiherdsmern who no longer have to carry cash back from markestConcern was involved in the pilot to use m-pesa in EmergenciesOur experience also shows that cash transfers are a better option than food distributions in areas where adequate supplies of food are locally available. It also demonstrates how technology can empower poor, marginalized and vulnerable people. It gives them choice. The dignity of our beneficiaries is key to our mission. We have since embedded this concept into our programming in Niger where we deployed 15k mobile phones to beneficiaries to help prevent a major disaster in 2009.Concern is recognised within the sector as leader in Mobile Money/Cash Transfers in Emergencies and is partnering with NGOs, banks, Carriers, the GSMA and other to mainstream this technology for rapid deployment where needed.
  • #9: We have piloted this technology in a number of our programs over the last two years. We’ve used it in our Conservations Agriculture projects in Zambia and Malawi, Nutrition programmes in the Republic of Sudan and Ethiopia, for on-street fundraising and on countless surveys around the globe. The investment cost in this technology is high but we have proven the value and impact this technology brings to our work.We are now investing in 500 of these devices and the Cloud based service to store the data to be deployed globally and mainstreamed throughout the organisation, throughout all programmes and embedded into our M&E processes.
  • #13: Mobile technology changed the developed world and it’s happening even faster in the developing world.
