 Idea Development
For my first mood board, I wanted to be heavy on images and inspiration that I know for a fact I will be using to
influence my final product. For example I already have a good idea of what my front cover will look like and that
will contain the classic gears of war cog symbol. This is such a important and recognizable image which would
seem appropriate to involve in my magazine. Then for my second thought process I collected the main colour
scheme that gears are linked to which are red, blue, black and a gritty brown. These are the more necessary
colours that I think of instantly when discussing the Gears of War franchise. The red is always involved in the
title of each game but also symbolizes the enemies (locust) and then the blue for the good guys (cog). The last
colour I chose was a bright yellow to symbolize the Lambent. They are associated with the whole franchise
because they only make one appearance but because I'm going to be covering each game I had to involve
them. some enemies that are only involved in Gears of War 3. Having this variety of colours will allow me to
have multiple options and also help with higher arkie of text. The fonts that I've selected for my first mood board
are some decent selections that I could defiantly use in my final product. I first of all found the actual font that it
on the cover of every game that the companies use. Then another two fonts that were appropriate to select were
fire and flame themed. The reason I chose these two were because Gears of war is just nothing death and
destruction and for the most part everything is on fire. The final images that I chose were just snippets of the
actual game that I would possibly involve when talking about the game, the more memorable storyline moments
to give back the nostalgic feel to day one fans.
 Idea Development
For my second mood board, I focused on what other options I could talk about from my mind map and some
camera shots I may use with my images. The content I mainly focused on was the Esports side of this, such as
events and in game content that you can receive for the newset addition. I from this mood board I feel like it will help
me touch up on certain informatio I may forget later on through the prodcuction. I felt that it would be good to collect
some more colour schemes and font types to give some more veriaty in my work. I added another relevent colour
that I didn’t add into my first mood board and that is the colour orange. The colour orange is related more to locust
then red like I mentioned before. Then after adding orange I went for the colour purple. The two different shades I
feel can be related with the esports and multiplayer side for when im talking about it in my franzine. I finally added in
two more fonts with some similarities to the original font of the francise. I keep repeating myself but it just gkves me
more options with designs if I decide on changing parts of my final franzine.

For my third and final mood board, I was beginning to run out of ideas and inspiration so I decidied to collect some
photoshop tutorial ideas that could elevate my final piece of work. I tried to find tutorials that linked to the genre of
the game and which would just fit in with the design I was going for. I saved the links below for the better tutorials if I
do decide to defiantly use one. After having a good look for tutorials, I moved onto the usual fonts and colour
scheme search. I added juat nthe colour grey which I linked with being appropriate because in the first two games
its very dull and dark looking with lots of grey. Alsoc most of the characters of the locust side are dark and grey
giving of the evil feel. For the fonts, I wanted to branch off from the classic font style and link in more with the genre
of destruction, damage and army styled fonts. These fonts would equally fit in perfectly and would add to the
prodcut im wanting to create.

Topic
Cover: For my front cover, I already had a rough idea on what exactly I was going to design. From how I've done
the layout, the front cover might look a bit simple from what I will be adding but I think doing like this would be
more suiting to the fanzine style. My masthead will be placed towards the top of the page and what I was thinking
of doing was to use one of the Photoshop tutorials. I was either going to follow the ‘FLAMES’ or ‘FIRE’ tutorials
because they both link well to the genre of my topic. I think I'm swaying more towards the ‘FIRE’ tutorial because I
have previously tried the ‘FLAMES’ tutorial and I didn't really enjoy the final product, so I might as well try
something new. The base colour of my cover will be black which will stick to the typical style of the francize and I
will add in the gears of war symbol into the middle where is says image. This will atheistically look very nice with
red and black and this will also be very recognizable for other fans such as my self. To finish off the front cover, I’ll
place the topics that will be involved in my fanzine towards the bottom of the page. Because this will be a fanzine I
might add n images along side the text just to add some more to my front cover.
Page 1 and 2 : For my first and second page, I was going keep with a black background to give it inline with the
rest of the fanzine. I will start with the original Gears of war game 2. I'm going to mention a brief description on
the story lie for those who have never played the game. After that I will give my general opinions on the game as
a whole. For the layout on the first page, I was thinking of having the title placed at the top with an image and a
column of text placed beside each other. On the second page I was going to have at least two images and two
columns of text. But I'm going to arrange both text and image opposite sides to add variety.
Page 3 and 4 : On the third and fourth pages, I'm going have two pages dedicated to images. The images will be
relating to the topics I will be speaking about, which is Gears of War. I wont add loads of images but enough to
help fit the page and show off the best parts of the game.
Page 5 and 6 : Moving on to the fifth and sixth pages, these will be dedicated to Gears of War 3. I will again talk
about the story line and my honest opinions on the game and involve some facts about the game that a lot of
people may not know. I don’t think I’ll keep the same layout as pages one and two just because I want to cry
keep the audience. This might make my fanzine have less of a professional look and feel to it but I can get away
with it because its not a magazine. Even though I wont have the same layout I’ll still have the same amount of
text and images.
Page 7 and 8: For page seven, I’m going to involve my interview. I think one page will be sufficient for the
interview because I’m going to have about ten questions and then involve the odd image to fill out the rest of the
page. For each question answered I will give my own opinion even if I agree or disagree. Again I'm going to stick
with the same colour scheme and theme. I’m not sure on what images that I will be involving on this page but I
might create some of my own fan art. Page eight will be about Gears of War 4. I have the same plans on how I'm
going to talk about the topic and again I will change the layout for the third time.
Page 9 and 10: On page nine I will finish off the rest of Gears 4 with more text and images. Once I have finished
up on that topic, I was going to move onto talking about the multiplayer for Gears of War 4 and the Esports
community. I've only really seriously started playing the multiplayer side of gears on the latest addition and really
paying attention to the Esports events. My knowledge doesn’t stretch to the earlier additions. Plus I'll have lots to
talk about just from Gears of War 4. The colours of the page will stay the same as the rest of my fanzine. The
images will be of the topic I'm talking about and involve relative fonts to the topic
Page 11 and 12: Page eleven, will be finishing off the topic of multiplayer and Esports. To Finish off my fanzine, I
was going to dedicate it to a massive image or fan art with lots of detail. I feel like for my fanzine this will fit nicely
and finish the fanzine perfectly.
Production schedule:
You have 3 weeks to complete your book along with any improvements. You need to plan this. What will you be
doing each week? How long should you spend on each task? How will you know if you are head or behind
schedule?
Week1 Week 2 Week 3
Starting Production with
my front cover which
may take up more than
a week.
If I complete the front
cover before the end of
the week then I’ll begin
on the first two pages.
For week two I will try
get through pages three
and four to a decent
level. Once hopefully
finishing both those
pages, I will move onto
five and six. By doing
this, I will have given
myself time to finish off
the second half of the
fanzine.
Going into the final week
of production, I will have
to complete pages
seven, eight, nine, ten,
eleven and twelve. To
ensure I get all of this
work done and finished
well Ill come in on days
off and use lunches to
get ahead of time.

Editor's Notes

  • #3: A range of ideas to take forward in to production. Should include images, colour schemes and font choices. Could include mock ups and evidence of existing design work which is inspiring you.
  • #9: A plan for the pages of your book. What will be the cover? What will be the running order? What will go in it? How many pages for each item? This is important to get right if you want it to print correctly later on. It will also help you plan the space you have.
