●It is about establishing ‘who we are’.
●It is a developmental task that makes us
independent and achieve a feeling of belongingness
and connectedness.
●Identity can be shaped by family, peers, location,
sporting clubs etc.
As a class list as many adolescent stereotypes
Adolescence
●Can be viewed as ‘rebellious’
●Change different aspects about themselves
- Clothing, Hair, Friends, Music etc.
●Responsible to an extent
●Maturation process: process of physiological
development
●Developing self concept and self esteem
Self Concept & Self-esteem
●Self Concept: a person’s belief about themselves
oReflected by ones self esteem, refers to how a person
will judge themselves ‘I am athletic’ or ‘I am lazy’
●Self-esteem: how a person feels about themselves
oImproving self esteem can be achieved by positive
self talk, thinking positive, accepting no one is perfect,
thinking about the good things in life etc.

●Events that mark the transition from one stage of the
lifespan to the next.

o17 years of age: Debutante Ball
o18 years of age: P-plates
oEnd of secondary school: ‘Schoolies’
o21 years of age: Celebrate your 21st ‘Key to the
house’
