IE APPLICATION 2015
K. If all of the world´s cultural heritage (sports, music, fashion,
architecture, literature, painting, etc..) was contained in a time
capsule, what would you include to demonstrate the legacy of your
country?
Paola Jandrić
July, 2015.
Introduction - CROATIAN MAGICAL CULTURAL
HERITAGE
Although Croatia is of one of the smallest countries in the world, it is rich in diverse
cultural heritage.
In proportion to its surface, there are more sites of cultural heritage under UNESCO
protection in Croatia than for example in France or Germany.
The reason for the wealth of tangible and intangible cultural heritage is the
outstanding position of Croatia on important traffic routes and at the crossroads of
great civilizations, each wanting to leave their mark
- from various prehistoric cultures to various nations such as Illyrians, Greeks,
Romans, and the rule of the Austro-Hungarian and long-term usually conquering
presence of the Ottoman Empire.
So, what would I include in time capsule??
The Old City of Dubrovnik
… because not many cities boast such a beautiful location on the cliffs above the clear blue sea, with such
well preserved medieval stone walls and towers. Archaic looks and the unprecedented fairy tale
appearance never leave you while roaming the ancient city…
Hvar Island
Declared as one of the ten most beautiful islands in the world by the famous American magazine
"Traveller". The beautiful city of Hvar is surrounded by powerful medieval walls, and from its
fortress Španjola high above the city you can see magnificent views of the green Pakleni Islands
and the open sea.
The amphitheatre Pula
Monumental amphitheatre which testifies to the extraordinary importance of
Pula and Istria since ancient times. This is the sixth largest Roman amphitheatre in the world and
also one of the best preserved. Long ago, in 1938, even before the establishment of the Cannes Film
Festival, a well visited first film revue took place in the Pula Arena.
Hum
The smallest town in the world according to Guinness World Records, located in Istria with
barely 20 inhabitants. According to the legend, Hum was built with the stones left over when
giants were building towns in the river Mirna valley.
Plitvice Lakes National Park
Magnificent National Park where the waters flowing over the limestone and chalk have, over
thousands of years, deposited travertine barriers, creating natural dams which in turn have created
a series of beautiful lakes, caves and waterfalls. The forests in the park are home to bears, wolves and
many rare bird species.
Carnival in Rijeka
Rijeka my hometown, is now best known for its carnival, one of the five largest in the world,
emphasised by the unique combination of ancient Slavic traditions and the urban carnival similar
to the one in nearby Venice. It involves a large number of the population of Rijeka and region,
carnival parade is known to gather more than 100 000 participants and guests.
Lacemaking in Croatia
Very valuable tradition dating back to the Renaissance when lacemaking began spreading
throughout the Mediterranean and continental Europe. Throughout the years, Croatian lace
has become notable for its unique patterns and designs. Today in Croatia there are three
centres of lacemaking tradition: the Adriatic islands of Pag and Hvar and the northern town of Lepoglava.
Kravata - Cravat
The tie, or cravat, daily worn by millions of men all over the world, comes from Croatia and
was originally called 'croata'. Young girls used to tie it to the necks of their loved ones
when they were leaving for war as a sign of devotion, metaphorically tying them to their
relationship.
Nikola Tesla
Croatian inventor, visionar, electrical engineer and physicist who contributed to the development of
the many todays, widely used inventions like alternating-current electrical system that's widely used
today and discovered the rotating magnetic field, the basis of most AC machinery.
Eduard Slavoljub Penkala
The extraordinary Croatian inventor and innovator with 70 to 80 inventions in the fields of
mechanics, chemistry, physics, aeronautics. His greatest invention was mechanical pencil then
called an "automatic pencil“ which was a truly revolutionary innovation among writing instruments,
and the first solid-ink fountain pen.
Croatian Cuisine
From the spicy sausages of Slavonia to the seafood from Dalmatia, Croatian food and Croatian
cuisine are different from one region to another. My favourite cuisine is from the coastal regions of Croatia , a rather
Mediterranean flavour, with lots of olive oil used in the preparation and the tradition of grilling fish and delicacies of
the sea.
Sports
Croatia has many successful sport players. Davor Šuker was the top scorer at the World Cup in 1998, where the
Croatian national team won third place. Croatian skier Janica Kostelić
is the best alpine skier in Olympic history. Blanka Vlašić in 2010 was named the best athlete of Europe. Tennis player
Goran Ivanišević is the only person who have won the men's singles title at Wimbledon with a wildcard. NBA players,
waterpolo Olimpic champions, and many more. ...
Conclusion…
Hopefully, this presentation have illustrated the significance of
participation of Croatia’s cultural heritage in World Time Capsule.
Although, it is only a small piece of what can be included!
Thank you for your attention!
