▸Description: In this open forum panel discussion, we will introduce and discuss the state-of-the-art in AI-based
Adaptive Instruction System design, standardization, and implementation. We invite ASU-GSV attendees to
collaboratively explore opportunities to standardize components and processes used in educational systems that
apply AI, including adaptive learning technologies, AI-based recommendation engines, and systems that use
machine learning to model student interactions and preferences to improve learning outcomes. This is motivated by
IEEE Adaptive Instructional Systems standards projects.

Adaptive Instructional Systems (AISs)
▸AISs are computer-based systems that guide learning experiences by tailoring instruction and
recommendations based on the goals, needs, and preferences of each individual learner or team in the
context of domain learning objectives… and include:
- Intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs)
- Intelligent mentors (recommender systems)
- Intelligent media
▸IEEE AIS Working Group supports the development of:
- AIS Conceptual Models
- AIS Interoperability Standards
- Recommended Practices for AIS Evaluation
