ROCK CYCLE
Starter: listen to this rap song
• https://youtu.be/EAgBlSotSB4
Task 1: What is a
rock cycle?
Learning Objective
•Describe and interpret the rock
cycle Keywords
1. Metamorphic
2. Igneous
3. Sedimentary
4. Rock cycle
Cross-match activity
Metamorphic rocks form from the cooling and solidification of magma or
lava
Igneous rocks form from the accumulation and lithification of sediments
(fragments of other rocks, minerals, and organic material).
Sedimentary form from existing rocks (igneous, sedimentary, or other
metamorphic rocks) that undergo transformation due to intense
heat, pressure, and/or chemically active fluids.
Rock cycle The rock cycle describes the processes through which the three
main rock types (igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary)
transform from one type into another.
Learning objective: Describe and interpret the rock cycle
Task 2: Card sorting: separate the cards into processes
involve in the formation of igneous, sedimentary and
metamorphic rocks
Learning objective: Describe and interpret the rock cycle
Check if you answers are correct
Group 1: Igneous group
Melting: Rocks (sedimentary
and metamorphic rock) in the
Earth's mantle or crust melt
due to high temperatures and
pressures, forming magma.
Cooling and solidification:
When magma rises towards
the surface or erupts from a
volcano, it cools and solidifies
to for igneous rock.
Group 2: sedimentary group
Process
• Weathering and erosion: Rocks on
the Earth's surface are broken down
into smaller particles by weathering
(physical and chemical).
• Transportation and deposition:
Sediments are transported by wind,
water, or ice to new locations and
accumulate in layers.
• Compaction and Cementation: Over
time, layers of sediments are buried,
compacted and cemented to form
sedimentary rock.
Group 3: metamorphic group
Heat and Pressure: High
temperatures, typically from
nearby magma or deep burial,
cause minerals in the rock to
recrystallize it without melting to
form Metamorphic rock.
Chemical Activity: Fluids can
introduce new minerals or
facilitate the growth of existing
minerals, altering the rock's
composition and structure.
Learning objective: Describe and interpret the rock cycle
