ROCK CYCLE
3 TYPES OF ROCK
BY:
MARNELLE B. TERO
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
Define igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic
rocks with regard of the rock cycle,
Identify the various stage of the rock cycle and,
Develop awareness on the importance of rocks to
our daily life.

LESSON PROPER
Rock cycle
is a web of processes that outlines how each
of the three major rock types—igneous, metamorphic,
and sedimentary—form and break down based on the
different applications of heat and pressure over time.
For example, sedimentary rock shale
becomes slate when heat and pressure are added.
Igneous
(from the Latin word for fire) form when hot, molten rock crystallizes and
solidifies. The melt originates deep within the Earth near active plate boundaries or hot
spots, then rises toward the surface.
Sedimentary
these rocks often start as sediments carried in rivers and deposited in lakes
and oceans. When buried, the sediments lose water and become cemented to form
rock.
Metamorphic
started out as some other type of rock, but have been substantially changed
from their original igneous, sedimentary, or earlier metamorphic form. Metamorphic
rocks form when rocks are subjected to high heat, high pressure, hot mineral-rich fluids
or, more commonly, some combination of these factors.
Cooling and Crystallization
Deep within the Earth, temperatures can get hot enough to
create magma. As magma cools, crystals grow, forming an igneous rock. The crystals
grow larger if the magma cools slowly, as it does if it remains deep within the Earth. If
the magma cools quickly, the crystals will be very small.
Weathering and Erosion
Weathering is the breaking down or dissolving of rocks and
minerals on Earths surface. Once a rock has been broken down, a process called erosion
transports the bits of rock and minerals away. Water, acids, salt, plants, animals, and
changes in temperature are all agents of weathering and erosion
Metamorphism
the changes in mineral assemblage and texture that result from
subjecting a rock to pressures and temperatures different from those under which the
rock originally formed.

D. APPLICATION
Summary
The three main rock types are igneous,
metamorphic, and sedimentary
 The three processes that change one rock to another are
crystallization, metamorphism, and erosion and
sedimentation.
 Any rock can transform into any other rock by passing
through one or more of the processes. This creates the rock
cycle.
Evaluation
Get a ¼ sheet of paper and answer the following question.
1. Is a series of processes that create and transform the types of rocks in Earth’s
crust?
2. _______ is the breaking down of dissolving of rocks and minerals on earth
surface. Once a rock has been broken down, a process called ________transports
the bits of rocks and minerals away.
3. Refers to the cycle processes by which the sediment is moved along
4. _______ is when sediment is pushed together by the weight of water and other
sediment pushing down on it. _______ are the process whereby dissolved minerals
in the water between the grains crystallize cementing the grains together.
5. Is the process where rocks are altered due to pressure and/or heat, changing
their appearance entirely.
