  Quaker parents William and
  Lydia Mitchell in Nantucket,
  Massachusetts
• Attended the Cyrus Pierce
  School For Young Ladies
• Self-educated for the vast
  majority of her younger years
• Teaching Assistant at age 16
Achievements
•       1847- First person to discover
         a comet only seen through a
                  telescope.
    •       1848- Awarded gold medal.
              Comet named the “Miss
                 Mitchell Comet”
•       1848- first female member of
         the American Academy of
             Arts and Sciences
        •    1850- Association for the
             Advancement of Science
More Achievements
 1865- First female professor at Vassar College, teaching
 astronomy. Director of college observatory. Got to use its
 12-inch telescope--- 3rd largest in the U.S

 1869- First woman elected to the American Philosophical
 Society.

 1873- Founded the American Association for the
 Advancement of Women. (president for 3 yrs)

 Led one session of the Women’s Congress
Death & Post-Death
1. Retired from Vassar in 1888 due to
   poor health.
2. Died in Lynn, Massachusetts on June
   28, 1889.
3. 1902- establishment of the Maria
   Mitchell Association on Nantucket
4. 1905- elected to the Hall of Fame of
   Great Americans
5. 1994-elected to the National
   Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca
   Falls, New York.
6. Crater on moon named after her.
7. Name carved in a frieze at the
   Boston Public Library

 Could do complex calculations by the age of 7. This chic

 Age 14, could adjust a ship’s chronometer(valuable skill in
 whale porting)
 Offered a job in the U.S Nautical Almanac Office in 1850,
 as a computer.
