Implications of the changes  to the 14-19 curriculum   Priya Bhama
These are the implications of the 14-19 curriculum Personal Learning & Thinking skills  Curriculum Dimension  Diplomas / Apprenticeship Functional skills Every Child Matters
Personal Learning & Thinking skills This will help students to develop a wider set of skills in the work force.  The 14-19 curriculum is looking to develop both “ employability skills ”  and “ finely honed study skills ” which employers and higher education partners are looking for respectively.  This will be done under a  framework of  six groups of skills  in accordance with  Mathematics, English and ICT .  The six skills include:  team working  independent enquiry self-management  reflective learning  effective participation  creative thinking.
Curriculum Dimension The 14-19 curriculum offers refresher and catch up opportunities for struggling students.  More flexible framework for teachers , creating more opportunities to tailor the curriculum for individual students. More coherence between subjects , transitional materials provided to ensure smooth progress to key stage 4  and beyond.  E.g. through cross curricular themes.  With a  less prescribed factual content ,  teachers will be able to personalise the  curriculum, designing learning  experiences to meet individual  needs and engage all learners.
Diplomas / Apprenticeship The Diploma is a new qualification that can be done at school or college it is done over 2 years. There are up to 10 subjects which will allow students to get practical experience.  The implications of the diploma for the student:  Practical experience through work experience and project.  Benefit kinaesthetic learners It will allow student to find out about an area of work they are interested in. There are many options open to the students as following the diploma Apprenticeship is vocational training which lets the apprentice develop skills and gain qualifications on the job.

Every   Child  Matters Every Child Matters is an important part of the curriculum.   The new emphasis on personal development are closely linked to Every Child Matters, promoting learners' wellbeing and enabling students to develop their potential as healthy,   enterprising and responsible citizens. Two new programmes of study at key stages 3 and 4 focuses on personal wellbeing and financial capability. The social and emotional aspects of learning (SEAL) programme can also make a significant contribution to Every Child Matters outcomes.
