INTRODUCTION
TO ICT
Created by: Norwin C. Adriatico
1. Understand the importance of ICT;
2. uncover the role of ICT in the different fields
of expertise;
3. to be informed about the generations in the
evolution of computers;
4. to redefine ICT in the digital age.
Objectives
What is ICT?
- the forms of technology that are used to transmit,
process, store, create, display, share or exchange
information by electronic means. UNESCO, 2010
ICT Overview
Information
- refers to the knowledge obtained from reading,
investigation, study, or research.
ICT Overview
Communication
- it is a process in which information is exchanged
between individuals through verbal and non-verbal
means.
ICT Overview
Technology
- are powerful tools that can be used by individuals
to gather and process needed information to aid
them in their office, school, work, and in day-to-
day activities.
ICT Overview
Computer
- is an electronic device, operating under the
control of instructions stored in its own memory
that can accept data according to specific rules,
produce results, and store the results for future
use.
Evolution of Technology
Automation
- is defined as “the technique of making an
apparatus, a process, or a system operate
automatically”.
Evolution of Technology
Short History of Computer
First-generation Computer (1946-1959)
- The first electronic computer was
developed in 1946 by John Presper
Eckert and John W. Mauchly.
- The computer was named Electronic
Numeric Integrator and Calculator.
- It can do additions and subtraction of
up to 10 digits and 167 sqms. in size.

Short History of Computer
Second-generation Computer (1959-1965)
- In this generation, transistors were
used as the interior section of the
computer.
- Transistors were much smaller, faster,
and more dependable than vacuum
tubes.

Short History of Computer
Third-generation Computer (1965-1971)
- Jack Kilby invented the integrated
circuits (IC) in 1965.
- Integrated circuits (IC’s) replaced the
transistors.
- A single IC has many transistors,
resistors, and capacitors can replace
an entire circuit board of transistor.

Short History of Computer
Fourth-generation Computer (1971-1980)
- Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI)
circuits were used which have about
5,000 transistors on a single chip
known as the microprocessor.
- The other application of the
microprocessors were applied to
pocket calculators, tv sets etc..
Short History of Computer
Fifth-generation Computer (1980-onwards)
- The VLSI technology has evolved into
Ultra Large-scale Integration (ULSI)
technology.
- This generation involves computer
intelligence such as artificial
intelligence (AI) and computers that
think like a human being.
Media
- “In the digital age, media can be considered as
the message, the medium, and the
messenger”.
Media in the Digital Age
- media is considered to be the message itself
for those who create and own the rights of
content: User-Generated Content (UGC) or
Professionally-produced content (PPC).
Media in the Digital Age
Blog
- It is a combination of two words: web and log.
Media in the Digital Age
Blogger
- The person who writes blogs.
- the medium used refers to the tool or tools
used in sending a message from the source to
the destination.
Media in the Digital Age
- the messenger is the one who delivers the
message.
Media in the Digital Age
- Living in the Information Technology Era, Ronina R.
Caoili - Tavuan and Mia V. Eleazar, 2019.
- Basic Computer Concepts and Applications with Fundamentals
of Programming, James Patrick A. Acang et.al, 2017.
