- 27. Migration Projects Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis (SMDS) Control Systems Migration SMDS is the world’s first industrial scale GTL plant in the world. GTL stands for Gas to Liquid. Synthesis gas is obtained by partial oxidation of natural gas with pure oxygen. The synthesis gas is converted into liquid hydrocarbons via a Fischer-Tropsch reaction.
