Inca Creation Myth
By: Phylicia B. Thompson
How Existence Was Created
• Incan creation is known based on
what was written by priests, from
Incan pottery and architecture,
and the myths and legends that
were passed down amongst the
native peoples.
• According to them the earth was
covered by darkness in the most
ancient of times.
• A god emerged from lake
Collasuyu and brought humans
with him. From there he created
the sun, moon, and stars.
• The God, Con Tiqui, created more
humans out of great rocks. Once
created, he sent them out into
different parts of the world.
How People Were Created
• When Con Tiqui Viracocha emerged from the lake,
he brought human beings with him.
• Once on land he created more humans out of
rocks.
• The female humans he created from the rocks were
already pregnant when created.
Gods
• Con Tiqui Viracocha : Con was
considered the creator of life.
He was in the form of a man,
but he had no bones. He gave
the first humans everything they
needed to survive.
• Pachacamac: Pachacamac was a
new god that came after Con
Tiqui. He arrived to drive out
Con Tiqui and his people
because Con was punishing his
people. Pachacamac then took
the earth and made ancestors to
human beings.
Good vs. Evil
• The people created by Con Tiqui rebelled against
him and forgot all of the good things that he had
done for them.
• Con Tiqui punished them by stopping rainfall
causing them to work hard and find water in the
drying riverbeds.
• Pachacamac came in and drove Con Tiqui out
turning his people into monkeys.
• He then created more humans.
Inca vs. Biblical/Greek and Roman
Stories
• In all three versions of creation, they begin with one
or more gods separating the elements and creating
light.
• The Greek/Roman stories and the Inca story both
have more than one god while the bible just has one
god.
• In the Greek/Roman stories humans were created
from nature and the things of earth while in the
other two versions humans were created in the God’s
image.
• In the Inca creation myth water is taken away while in
the other two versions there are floods.
