IIoT Audit – Why, What, When, Where
Background – Is IIoT a Product or a Solution?
What is a product? A product is something which meets a common need or
requirement faced by many and can be packaged and distributed with limited
data about the end customer while being contemporary and relevant. For eg. a
simple product like Television which meets the need of home entertainment and is a
common household requirement. In current times it could be a smart TV which could
seamlessly connect to internet for more entertainment options.
How about a solution? A solution is something which aims to solve a problem or
enhance existing system capabilities to meet end-goal requirements of the
customer. A solution is customized to meet the end-customer’s requirement and
needs. It considers several data points and presents several benefits to the user and
presents new opportunities, previously unknown to the user.
So coming back to the original query, can IIoT ever be or should be considered a
product? Going by the above definitions – can IIoT be defined as a product? Can
two factories or Companies despite being in the same domain or sector ever have
the same internal problems? The simple answer to all these questions is NO.

IIoT is a customized solution that should not and cannot be considered a packaged
product but as a customized solution fit for a particular plant or manufacturing unit.
Some factories (or Companies) might be facing a problem with maintenance
scheduling, some with production planning, some with resource planning while
some might be facing challenges to contain the production costs. IIoT as a solution
attempts to address specific problems faced by a plant in a systematic manner
backed by sufficient data and intelligent data analytics.
The 1st and foremost step in IIoT is identifying the business goals of a Company in
conjunction with the production capacities of the manufacturing plants. This 1st step
plays the most important role in overall success of the IIoT project as it lays a strong
foundation for a scalable solution with a road map and milestones for future. In fact
it is this phase of the overall project that can make or break the project.

IIoT Project Stages
What is IIoT Audit?
IIoT adopts a top-down approach going from business use-cases and fragmented
into simpler technical use-cases. This approach ensures that IIoT has a direct impact
on business goals. We adopt an iterative or agile approach which is the most
popular software development models. The difference here is that the agile
methodology is applied to the overall project.
The IIoT audit consists of understanding the existing business, manufacturing plant
setup, technical processes, business processes, equipment set up etc. In addition to
understanding the present setup the IIoT audit also consists of detailed discussions
with the plant team from various divisions including business, maintenance and
production.
Upon understanding a firm’s business goals it is transformed into a simple system
architecture in this stage. This basic architecture consists of an outline of the
proposed IIoT solution based upon the existing setup as well as expectations from
the proposed solution.

A top-down approach ensures that the proposed IIoT solution eventually meets the
business goals identified during the IIoT Audit. Mapping business problems to
technical requirements to achieve strategic goals is a crucial outcome of the audit.
A basic system outline or architecture is also prepared during the audit.
Why IIoT Audit?
IIoT is a solution deployed to enable your Company achieve the full potential. To
achieve the same your Company needs to address your own specific business
challenges, meet strategic goals and objectives as well as align the resources.
IIoT Project benefits the company in various ways and is a stepping stone towards
Industry 4.0 (and Industry 5.0) compliance. Several manufacturing units do not yet
have the necessary capabilities and technologies to become Industry 4.0
compliant. However they can still do that by retrofitting certain equipment and also
using advanced technologies to fill up the gap. These can be identified through IIoT
Audit only.
Why IIoT Audit is necessary
1. IIoT = IT + OT : IIoT is a combination of IT (Information Technology) and OT
(Operational Technology). Both these areas need to be combined by an
external expert agency for success of IIoT Project. IIoT Audit is the 1st step in
that direction.

2. Unique Characteristics : Each Company (or manufacturing unit) is different
and has it’s own sets of challenges or problems which should be clearly
understood before IIoT solution deployment.
3. Strong Foundation : IIoT Audit is about laying a strong foundation over which
the solution needs to be built. It is also imperative that the IIoT solution covers
all the major aspects such as planning, business process, production,
maintenance etc. and not just focuses on one aspect.
4. Scalability and Modularity : It is quite possible that the pilot project deployed
addresses one or two key aspects but overall the project should be scalable
to implement solution for each of the key aspects in a phase-wise manner.
5. Interoperability : Each of the Company’s department works in Silos and
independently. An IIoT Audit ensures that all the departments are on the
same platform from the beginning of the IIoT Project.
6. Organized Systematic Approach : Formation of an Organizational structure
(similar to Energy Cell) is required wherein each HoD or deputy HoD is a
representative of their department for successful integration of a single
platform project.
7. Future : The outcome of the audit is a well drafted road-map and a solution
architecture to achieve your business goals by adopting IIoT. This road map is
essential as it helps in staying the course and achieving goals along the way
in a systematic manner.
When IIoT Audit?
IIoT Audit is the first and foremost step in the entire solution deployment. It is to be
carried out the moment an Organization is planning for IIoT project. So IIoT Audit is
the starting point during which we closely work with your Company to analyse and
study your systems, data requirements, processes etc. to identify the best possible
solution.
In simple terms, IIoT Audit is like the foundation of a building. Stronger and deeper
the foundation better is the construction.

Where IIoT Audit?
The IIoT Audit is carried out at your Company’s premises i.e. Headquarters and the
manufacturing plants (existing or planned).
During the IIoT Audit our team of Certified experts carry out a visit for detailed
discussions, requirements gathering and analysis etc. The idea is to have a
collaborative approach towards solving your business challenges and problems.
